I've ordered some climbing french beans, and some climbing Borlotto beans. Should I grow them up 8 foot canes like my runners, or could I use 6 foot canes?

I've always bought 8' poles rather than 6' ones for climbing beans.  The beans seem to keep going skywards until they run out of room!

One tip, though, if you go for the 8' canes.  I don't know how tall you are, but if you're under 5'4" (say), you might want to think about fastening them together before they are in the ground if possible.  I spent ages getting mine into the ground a couple of years ago, only to realise i couldn't reach them to tie the wigwam together  :oops:

Fortunately, another committee member was on his plot nearby and he came to my rescue.  He did find it very funny that the smallest member of the committee had the tallest canes

I always use 8ft canes. You might think about freezing your bolloti's, I grew them last year, had a good crop and dried them, come to use and they had gone mouldy so freezing mine in future.

Thanks guys...... will have a few 8' canes left after erecting runner bean frame, so will use some 8' and some 6'
