Consequences of Warmest Winter...
« on: December 29, 2015, 21:38 »
White flies covered my Curly Kale and I have pulled them all up, but the flies form flocks in my compost bin!

Anyone has experience of what would the next year going to be after such a warm winter?

Will it be a insects festival later? :-(

Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

Hopefully we will get a couple of weeks cold weather maybe in February to kill off some of the little beasties.

Most of the broad bean sowings on our allotments look too advanced for the time of year - even a bit 'leggy'. Strong winds are going to give them a hammering.

Some people prefer to sow broad beans in autumn and use a variety called Aquadulce Claudia.
It is intened to be grown over winter.

Even Autumn sown Aquadulce, are much bigger than normal because of the warmth - luckily, so far the SE corner has missed the worst of the gales.
I wouldn't think they would stand up to those for long  :(

There are a few in flower on our plot! They are going to catch the wind today, it's a bit of a gale at the moment.

the weather really is crazy, my fear is that when winter arrives it will run well into normal springtime. 3 years ago there was no fruit for miles when a frost hit the blossom in may. im taking a year out next year as i can't predict what is going to happen (i know we can never predict but i think thi is on a different scale). this summer the august weather was so cold we had the central heating on in the house and our crops just stalled on the allotment, loads wasted.

It's leggy Aqaudulce my initial post refers to. I like Aquadulce only about 3-5" high over the rough weather months. Many I see are a foot high already, and in for a beating because mild weather growth is too advanced.

My worst fears are that the cold spell will come just at the worst of times.
