Title: sexing silkies / haircuts for polish chucks
Post by: primrose1 on August 26, 2011, 22:12
I have three 8 week old silkies please could I have some advice on sexing them? I also have three new polish chickens, is it common practise to trim the hair around their faces so that they have better vision as my cockerel cannot see a thing under his big hair style??!!!

I know, my cockerel literally cannot see a thing he has so much hair over his eyes. I think he might be a bit carmer if he could see things approaching and not just hear them!!

I know people who show use a hairband or someething like micropore/vetwrap to tie the feathers back without damaging them, that may help :)

Sexing silkies is notoriously difficult, and often it is not until they eirhter crow or lay an egg you can be sure, unfortunately :(

also when putting their feathers in a ponytail have a good look as they can be prone to mites in their headgear.
