Title: Scaly leg?
Post by: Jane-M on March 23, 2009, 13:07
I am sure there is advice in here somewhere but Idon't know how to look. One of my CL hens has large shiny yellow scales all down her shins. I haven't noticed these before, I think her legs were whitish with small scales, bur truly can't remember.  Please don't ask for photo as I haven't the wherewithal. I have looked in my books but they show dry raised scales, hers are rounded, shiny and flat down.  ??? They look rather nice!

How old is she Jane?
Has she just moulted?
Is she laying?

Doesn't sound like mites, if the scales are flat???

Sarah :)

Has she started laying? prob why her legs have  now turned yellow. That should be the normal colour :) They will fade a bit at the end of the laying season ;)

One of my ex-bats had pink legs until she moulted and since then they've been yellow.

Like above, is she getting in the mood for popping an egg or two?

She is 2 and a half and just egging again after a little rest - she's gorgeous, and apart from the sporty yellow legs is just fine. I think perhaps I just didn't notice them changing. Thanks for the reassurance.

I found a fascinating chart once on how long a hen has been laying according to which body parts have lost their yellow colour!  Apparently the colour builds up again when they are off lay.

Pity I can't find it now  :(
