Title: Celebrity chefs: Are they taking the p***
Post by: upthetump on October 09, 2007, 13:58
Is it a fair question? After watching Jamie at Home last week( Jamie Oliver on C4), he seems to be just rehashing  what other cooks have done. Or, is it informative telly becausue he may be educating people who dont grow their own. I feel he's jumping on ANOTHER bandwagon. My partner won his last book and she gave it to me. It seems an almost exact copy of Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's MEAT book except the diagrams in Olivers look like they've been drawn by his kids with crayons. I feel they are trying to fool us with each chef copying techniques from each other. Am I wrong?????

There are only so many ingredients, and a finite way of preparing them, so yes, every cook to an extent copies from previous cooks.

I salute them more in trying to re-educate the masses with good grub.

Jamie would appeal to people that would not watch H F-W and vice versa.

Unfortunately Jamie's getting older (aren't we all), so he would be considered a fogey by today's youngsters.

Doubtless there will be someone younger and trendier in the pipeline ready to rehash the food fad of the moment.

He's opening a new restaurant in Bath next year called Jamie's Italian where he plans to use local produce and free range stuff - if it helps the local producers then good for him I say, and that should have a knock on effect on what can be grown locally and seasonally.

Thank heavens we've gone though the nouvelle cuisine phase - if I'm paying for the meal I want to feel full afterwards - none of that carrot and 2 sprouts on an arty-farty plate for me thank you.

And as Johnny Craddock said about Yorkshire puddings, "if you make them like this, they'll end up looking like Fanny's..."

And I suppose that every year a new audience starts to watch, so to them it is all new.
I still use a really old Womans Realm cookbook for traditional meals, as all the later ones seem to be full of arty-farty cooking.

LOL. Yeah guys your right. I suppose im just showing my age now cos I've seen it done and redone. Thats the problem with middle age, less surprises

On a better note I'm staying in Looe for the weekend and I've promised the missuss and the kids a fish and chip takeaway from Rick Steins Fish and Chip shop in Padstow. Will report back on Tuesday if your curious. Or has anyone been there and got any advice. Thats the advantage of middle age- your not afraid to ask questions or learn a bit more.  :)

Happy gardening

I think the best of the lot is Nigel Slater. Comfort food, not too messed about. Consistently excellent. Recommend his 30 Minutes cookbook.

By the way, thanks to whoever it was who came up with the winter warmer recipe with sausages, baked beans, tinned tomatoes, onion, garlic and Worcester Sauce etc. This went down really well wiith the kids. The Mrs hasn't had a look in yet!

And finally, back to Nigella Lawson who I was moaning about the other day. Try this blog:

http://mindbodydoc.wordpress.com/2007/09/04/nigella-wobbles/

I'm afraid it is a little rude, so please don't send me to the step Aunty. Anyway, there probably isn't room at the moment.

Theres a rather rude old joke which asks "what's the difference between a cross country run and Fanny Craddock"

On a more serious note, you can have too much of a good thing. I personally think that some people don't know when to quit whilst they are ahead. They breeze onto the TV like a breath of fresh air but then overstay their welcome by going on for too long.

I enjoyed Gordon Ramsey at first until his effing and blinding simply became monotonous and predictable.
I wouldn't dare say this on a certain site but IMO HWF has tried to ' skin the same cat' so many times that he to is now well into the boring category. The more desperate the celeb chef get to stay in the limelight the more desperate the programmes become.
This ' Wildlife Gourmet' programme is a question in point. To my mind its all been done before by Ray Mears and HWF only much better.

At the end of the day of course , its all about trying to make money.

Wooo-hooo - I've got tears in my eyes from laughing at nigella wobbles. How too sadly true! guess the word 'overextended' isn't in her vocabulary.

Oh, please don't get me started about Nigella.  It's self indulgent self parodying soft porn.  The actual food is way down the list of what is important.

I agree that Nigel Slater's food is excellent.  However, he really has some strange mannerisms and has some outrageous views in real life.  A friend of mine knows him.

HFW's time has come and gone.  He was a breath of fresh air at first but his voice over has become a bit grating.

I just want to slap Jamie Oliver and Gary Rhodes silly.  But, despite their flawed personalities, many of them create amazing food and I can forgive the likes of Gordon Ramsey and his ilk as long as they keep their high standards.

I watched a documentary about Fanny and we really don't want to go there again.   :?

Hey Bodger I just hope Aunty doesn't do a Googlie to find that joke - I think the shock might just see her off.

And you'd be shackled to the naughty step for the rest of your natural. If not longer. Your bones would stay there for ever as a warning to those who tell jokes about Fanny Craddock...

HOWEVER.....

In spite of all the wobbles and waddles, the eating at the bus stop, on the bus, in the taxi and making something for a friend and then eating it all on the way there (how rude!), and the raiding the fridge late at night, and the licking her fingers, and the really busy "life" she leads, and the kids and their homework (don't get me started), and doesn't the boy need a bl**dy haircut (?!) and the alleged kitchen, and the not very healthy balance of some of the dishes (no wonder she's plumpish)...

Some of the recipes are really good.

Still prefer Nigel though.

What about the ninja headband he used to wear?.  Sad or what?  But I really like his desserts cookbook.  He keeps it simple but the results are wonderful.

Where I think Jamie made a difference was that his recipes are, in general, pretty easy to follow. I think he was the first cook in a generation who made people of all ages think "I can do that - what's the worst that could happen?"

They also taste good without needing a page full of ingredients.

The Italian chappie he served his apprenticeship with and who appears on his programmes from time to time (forgottn his name) is also great to watch - committed when it matters but nicely relaxed about the "small stuff".

Apart from him, I enjoy HFW, Slater, Martin and Stein.

If Ramsay did a "straight" cooking show, rather than his awful "reality TV" stuff, I'd watch him for days as he is a wonderful cook.

Sacrilege to say it but I find Delia patronising in the extreme - I'll use her recipes from books and web, but I can't watch her on TV without my teeth starting to itch. Same with Rhodes, except his recipes are usually very ingredient-heavy and time consuming.

Nigella and Ainsley - where's my shotgun!

I've watched some Delia, and other than her Yorkshire pudding recipe, the rest of the stuff she makes is decidedly strange.
Jamie tries to keep recipes fairly simple but does intend to set the worlds' tonsils on fire with his fetish for spicy food. However, did enjoy his ..goes to Italy show.
We get only Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares here and I won't even watch the telly ads for his show as they're a complete put off. A real chef doesn't have to turn the kitchen blue.
Nigella should just waddle back home to her stacks of money.
We get few other UK chefs here - thank goodness.

Agreed - I like to think he inspired many (well some) younger blokes to cook for their other halves... after all food is the music of love and all that...

I love Jamie Oliver, he's a local lad and we used to eat in his parents pub a lot when he was a boy. It was the first pub around here that sold interesting food.

I was chuckling to myself about her today when I was on the bus. Yeah I bet she pops on public transport to go get a quarter loaf of sourdough bread every morning my ar*e. Yes the soup at the bus stop thing really did make me snort my cup of tea up my nose    Has this lady nothing better to do than ponce about the local shops in a twin set and denim jacket?

As for Jamie at Home, well the first time I saw him in the vegetable garden wearing green quilted jacket and waving a pair of clippers, well I just switched over.

Some of the Jamie and Nigella food is alright. I just can't take the image seriously.

I like Nigel Slater too. I have Appetite and Real Food. Eating for England is on order. Also like Bill Granger.

Hi all. Just back from Looe, had lovely weekend. Went to Padstow and had Cod and Chips in Rick Steins' Fish and Chip Takeaway and it was.......
less than average  :( . The chips tatsted as if par-boiled first and the batter on the fish was very poor and left a greasy aftertaste. Cant reccommend it sorry and at £24 for the four of us it wasn't cheap either.
