Feeding beans?
« on: July 01, 2020, 09:00 »
This is my first year of growing beans; broad, borlotti and french. They are in good soil and I gave them some potash when they started to flower.

Question. Should I be continuing to feed them and if so with what?

Just leave them to it, they make their own nitrogen on nodules on their roots  :)

They do "fix" their own nitrogen.

However, if you think there is a reason that the soil may be potash or phosphorus deficient, adding that would be beneficial (as you have done with K).  That K may be enough, as soil would really need to be depleted to be low on phosphorous.

The Borlotti leaves are rather yellow so I have given them a balanced feed. Is there anything else that I should do? The pods seem to be developing well and the beans are swelling.

I had my first Sutton broad beans today. Delicious. My husband served them raw with artichoke hearts and Parma ham  :D

Will definitely be growing again.

I am really not sure. The Borlotti plants havent perked up at all after their feed. The leaves are very yellow and many have fallen off. Any ideas?

Was it a dry or liquid feed?

Dry fertilisers (especially chicken poo) take quite a long time to take effect, especially if the weather is dry.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Don't think there's much more you can do then GP - hopefully they'll pick up soon (my runner beans still look as if they'd rather be somewhere else!)

Yes, they won't have enjoyed that one bit - let's hope for warmer and better weather soon (you're not alone!)
