I noticed Morrison's are selling named varieties of potatoes for eating, it got me thinking  are planting non seed potatoes worthwhile?

We often plant potatoes that have started tubers, they do not usually give many potatoes from them, but if you have the room just plant theme and see what you get.

Some shop bought spuds are treated with a sprout inhibitor to increase their shelf life so you may get no or limited sprouts, therefore a reduced yield/poor growth. Organic ones should be ok though I suppose.

Also, seed potatoes are often described as virus free, a guarantee not offered on those meant for eating.

This said, plenty grow supermarket spuds without issues so why not give them a go, you won't do any harm, the worst that can happen is disappointment at harvest time.

There might actually be a bit of lasting harm if you import a potato disease into your plot soil.  Yes many grow supermarket potatoes and get away with it, but as with everything in life, there is a risk you won't.

Each to their own, but I always stick with certified seed spuds  :)

I agree NS, I've also noticed an increase in people selling 'ware' potatoes (meaning those meant for eating) on-line, in small quantities, presumably to get people to buy them for planting. So do be careful what you buy.
