What-hoe!
« on: March 03, 2023, 23:36 »
Sorry for the dreadful play with words in the Subject!  :nowink: But, this IS a request to find out what type the hoe is in the pics I attach - I've never seen one like it.  I recently acquired this hoe from a deceased relative,  it is quite old (I'd guess it was made in the 1950's or thereabouts), but in good shape.  I've done a preliminary clean up & put an edge on it.  You can quite easily see the Wilkinson Sword marque on the handle - I never knew they were into horty equipment.  Any info is appreciated.

It's called a 'Swoe', all three sides of it should be sharp and it's designed to get between plants where space is limited, using a back & forth motion.

Thanks for that info.  Sounds like it's a hybrid name.  Similar function to a shuffle hoe?

Yep exactly the same as my Wilkinson sword swoe that I swear by it cuts on the pull & the push & sold as self sharpening. I bought it new about 15 years ago & have never sharpened it, I think it’s stainless steel. The little edge is great for getting in close to plants. I wouldn’t be without it

You're right Snowdrops. Not sure I'd manage another form of hoe now

I think you're right about its age, as the handle has a slight bend at the top. The newer ones seem to have a straight shaft - which I didn't know until I did a quick search!

I have my dad's Swoe which he bought around the early sixties, and it's a sharp now as it ever was!

Like others here, I wouldn't be without it - the accuracy for getting in between plants is perfect!

Yes, I'd add that it's a dream to use, funny name or not.  The bent handle especially benefits close control of it.  Thanks for the info everyone.

Ah!  Swoe - made up from SWord from Sword and hOE.  Obvious ain't it.
