Title: Battery strimmers
Post by: mumofstig on July 26, 2011, 08:52
After the local good fer nowts stole the site's big petrol strimmer  the OBs can't strim all the plot edges anymore :(
That's why I'm thinking about buying a battery powered one, the petrol ones are a bit heavy for me, or should I just carry on with the shears :D

Anyone got a recommendation, or otherwise?

So long as it's only grass that your strimming (not thick stemmed plants) it will be fine.
It takes a littl longer with a batery one but they work just as well, one of the women on our site uses one.
You would also be advised to buy a spare battery to make sure you have enough power to do the whole are.

There is another option though, you can buy a sealed lead acid battery from Maplins and attach a harnes to it wire it up to the strimmer through a quick release connector and run it off that, thats what i did with my head light for fishing.

The batterys are cheap and will last for ages, or like i said just buy a spare.  :)

We use a battery strimmer for just that job, it lasts about 45 mins to an hour.
Must try that tip about the sealed acid battery

Shears sounds like a bending job unless you have long-handled ones. How about a scythette? :D

a scythette? what's that then, a small scyth?
it sounds sharp, and, knowing how clumsey I can be, dangerous  ::) :D

Something like THIS (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neill-Tools-Spear-Jackson-4752SS/dp/B002W5VMBW/ref=tag_stp_s2_edpp_url/275-3891458-3926415). Other brands are, of course, available. :)

we use a battery strimmer - for each charge we can get one long side and one short side done - so we know if can be easily all done on 2 trips to the lottie, with a recharge in-between. Works just fine, and stops the couch grasss encroaching on my beloved lottie !

Had my little "Challenge" battery strimmer for about five years now.  Got it at either been and queued or homebase.  Does a good job, just a little less power than electric.

I got dear wifey a battery one to use in the garden at home that has little plastic mower type blades rather than chord, quite handy as they just clip on and off and are cheap enough in Wilkos.

The only one I've had a go at was the new Stihl battery strimmer.
As you would expect, a very, very good tool, but silly expensive.

Here we go, a link.
