Title: Isles of Scilly
Post by: DD. on October 21, 2009, 09:14
Mrs Digger and I have just returned from a break in the Isles of Scilly, where we seem to have hit their summer.

I thought I'd share a few piccies we you and I'll add to this thread as time goes on, so caution - this will be picture heavy!

Any incongruous photos are easily explained away as our other hobby of amateur radio, (the photos with strange poles, lighthouses etc.).

Firstly some general piccies:

Next I'll add some photos of the Abbey Gardens on the Isle of Tresco & once completed I'll shift this thread into "Places To Visit".

Oh - and for Auntie - yes there will be some seals later.

It's funny, I've been to Cornwall so many times, but never thought to go to Scilly

Hi DD,

They are great pics! I've been a keen watcher of the "Island Parish" programmes when they've been on and I have thought the islands would be a great place to visit some day. There's something about the intensity of the light that you get when you are surrounded by so much sea. We have that to a degree here too, being on a peninsula.   8)

Well - it's a thrush and that's all I know!

It just sat on a wall a few feet away begging for its piccie to be taken.

Great pics DD.

Soo jealous.

Scilly is a mecca for birders. See many.

Yes it is a Song thrush.

Didn't fall asleep on that post.

Wow, wow and wow.  :D

After some bitter disappointment and anger at work today (which I won't go into in order not to hijack the thread) I am sitting here with a huge smile on my face, even at the lighthouses  ;) .

Thanks so much for posting those piccies Dave.  :D

I may never make it there but I can live vicariously

We went there for the day when I was about 18 flew over on my first (and only) ever helicopter ride and came back on the ferry.  The bit I remember most was the old charabanc type bus ride we went on round the Island.  The driver kept putting the coach in neutral and then getting out of his seat to turn round and tell us what we were seeing!  He also kept stopping to talking to 'Mrs Jones' out of the window about her husband's malady or whatever.  Happy memories.  Thankyou for sharing your pics and bringing back some lovely memories.

Really nice pix DD, a sort of northern Bahamas. Bet the seals area stank. You can always smell them long before you find them

Wow what a lovely place. Hadn't thought about going there but think that is now going to change. So did you do the Tony Hancock thing and get distracted with the lines it is not raining in Tokyo?  ;)

These pictures are awesome!  I lived in Italy for five months and Sicily was one of my favorite places I visited.  Absolutely beautiful, and not to mention that I found the food to be incredible.  I would love to go back :)

Errm.

These are the Isles of Scilly off Cornwall. Not the Island of Sicily, although they may look Mediterranean.

I got married on the IOS this year - fantastic place I love it.

You can hand feed the birds they are that tame - if you fancy having sparrows landing on your hands and taking food from you go to Juliets Garden Resturant on St Mary's ( near Hugh Town) and order something with bread in it!

Thanks DD, I keep watching the programmes and thinking I'll go there. Is it very busy now after the programmes?

I love the pictures of the Norfolk Pines in Tresco, I was fascinated by them in NZ and even tried to grow one here but the poor thing curled up and died in the cold :(

It was very quiet as you can tell from the beaches, don't know how it will affect peak tourist time.

This time of year there should have been a lot of twitchers, but there was only a fraction of the normal amount, ironically because of the good weather.

A lot of the small tea rooms, cafes etc. were closing down from the winter as a matter of course whilst we were there.

I went in Agust for the day a few years back, and it wasn't busy  :)
My Mum and Dad honeymooned there and we took them over for the day on the plane from Land's End airport. Went to the gardens and walked all over the island while M&D pottered around the town. Glad we did as we lost Dad a couple of years after the visit  :(
It's a beautiful place, well worth the visit. :)
