Title: Broody chook, currently sat on eggs!
Post by: becky on June 21, 2006, 13:28
:D Hi all, just wanted to let you all know that Ann, my gorgeous black Maran, is currently broody. I decided I would give her a little treat, and let her become a mum, so I bought her some Cream Crested Legbar eggs, off of ebay. The reason for the breed choice, is that they are an auto sexing breed, therefore, when the chicks hatch I can tell which ones are girls and which ones are boys, straight away, rather than having to wait a few months. I am currently wondering whether she will notice that the eggs are a different colour than her own usual ones, the new eggs being a pale blue/green colour! And also whether she will wonder why the chicks don't look like her, when they hatch!!  Just wanted to share my excitement, with everybody, as hatching chicks is something I have been egar to do, since getting chickens. I will keep you posted with progress.

Congratulations - since you're 'expecting' :)
I don't think you need worry - chickens will even try to hatch china eggs and if birds worked out the offspring were different the cuckoo would have never existed.
Exciting isn't it :) :) :)

:( Oh well, Ann tried her hardest, but she couldn't make the infertile eggs hatch, however hard she tried. Just a little update about the hatching eggs, after waiting with baited breath for 3 weeks, the day of reckoning came on Tuesday, and not a peep was heard. All the eggs were infertile, and I was gutted, but not as much as broody Ann. She did well, bless her, but no joy. We will try again next spring I think, if she goes broody!?
