Broad bean advice (at altitude!)
« on: November 08, 2011, 12:40 »
Hi Has anyone got any advice?
I normally sow my broad beans in spring, they do very well but normally harvest quite late.
I live in North wales at about 1200 feet.
Does anyone know if it would be worth me sowing some now, in an attempt to get an earlier harvest? Last winter we had deep snow cover  (2 feet) on our veg plot for at least two weeks. Or is my aspect too extreme
Thanks

Last year mine went all black and didn't recover, then the mice ate the next sowing so...

... this year I have cloches at the ready and also I shall grow some in pots very early in the spring and harden them off before planting them out too.

Hopefully it'll extend the cop a bit, or at least make sure I get some beans at least

Although I'm close to sea level I'm in north Cumbria and have given up on trying to overwinter broad beans outside. When they do survive they are often behind the spring planted ones. My answer is to sow a few dozen in large containers in the greenhouse in February and move them outside when the weather improves. That way they get a head start on the outdoor sown ones and still give a decent crop.
