What to do with broad bean plants that are ready
« on: March 25, 2013, 07:31 »
Hi chaps - I have some B/beans in peat pots, they are 10" high and the roots are starting to come out through the pots, I'm in the south west so not as bad weather-wise than many other places but still too cold, I guess, to put them in the soil, can I 'hold them back' a bit, I suppose I could cobble together some plastic cloches but am loathe to spend too much money ... any thoughts welcome.

Regards Roger

They will be fine outside somewhere sheltered from the wind - I am guessing they are currently inside somewhere?

Broadbeans are very tough --mine are in modules outside and are doing just fine

As per Sunny's question - are they inside?

They may need hardening off before planting out. If they've been somewhere really warm, you may have some weak and leggy plants that may not survive transplanting.

I'm a bit concerned that at 10" high, if grown somewhere quite warm this may have happened. Whilst they don't like severe frosts, they do not want much warmth at all.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks chaps ... yes I started them off inside but have moved them to a cold 'sun lounge' I'll leave them there for a few days and then, after your assuring advice, plant them out ... good of you to take the time. Roger

I've got a tray of broad beans that have been in the greenhouse since birth (not sure what to call it otherwise) and they are about 4-5" high. I want to harden them off but the weather is so cold it might kill them.
I have a covered veranda outside that gets a bit of the late afternoon sun (if it ever appears) and wondered if I should move them to this area as a stopgap before planting out in the lottie? Or would this make them leggy trying to get to the light?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

If it outside, there's plenty of light, so do it!

It's called "germination", by the way!
