Guys I am so so worried!
One of my best layers did not come out for food the last two days.
One eye is completely gunked up, it was foaming bubbles the first day and now today it is closed up. Its like she got a peck on the eye or a bite, its swollen and inflamed.
Secondly, a little off balance, not walking.
Alsp, green bile pooh.
I seperated her yesterday, shes still doing no better. I have her some scrambled egg and honey, at least she ate.
No vets near me that take chickens!
I bought two hens in August who were supposedly 9 months old, neither laid and both were sneezing when I got them. Now two others are sneezing, they say some birds are carrier of the above condition and I dont know whether to cull or what.

Hi Pewee, I'm no expert with poultry, but if it was mine I'd cull to be honest.
You may want to wait until some of the more experienced keepers come along.

Sounds like mycoplasma to me. It could be something else respiratory but you'd need a vet to confirm a diagnoses. They do need antibiotic treatment though ! or as Rich said :( and a very thoough cleaning of their accompdation and run area !

I dont understand Aubt Sally, I cant clean the run, its all just muck and i clean out their nest box every week and replace the bedding. They're very well looked after, Im shocked shes ill...

It's the disease brought in by the sneezing birds.
I was wrong in my advice that thourough cleaning would be necessary. I've just checked up and if it's mycoplasma it will only remain in the environment for a short while. (I'd got it the wrong way round :roll: ) They do need medical treatment in my opinion though !

Its nothing to do with what you've done, or the way you treat your birds.

Thanks Aunt Sally,, keep ringing vets. In ireland, you need to do really well to get the points to got and study vetinary medicine, why then do they only know how to treat dogs and cats and the likes? Some vets wont treat a chicken? Its still an animal!

As Bodger said, it's nothing you've done, the new birds were sick when you go them.
If you find a vet one of these is probably what you need:
Tilmicosin, tylosin, spiramycin, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones.
Tylosin seems the most popular choice.

agree with Babe sounds like infectious coryza - but whether it is coryza or mycplasma Baytril or Tylan will help and all your birds will need to be treated.

It could even be both conditions. Mycoplasma puts the hens at great risk of secondary infections.

it was the smelly bile, swollen eyes and off balance that i thought may point to coryza.

38 in a couple of weeks...im really scared. 40 is getting close now and i just cant get my head around it.

Hi guys, just an update.
Chicken still poorly, now indoors under heat lamp, she drank water from a shot glass today with 1 eye dropper of ACV, and also had some warm oats.
Her eye is terrible though, I tried to clean it with warm water. It was completely closed over.
VET- said he would give seeing the chicken 'try'. He doesnt have tylan, but does have baytril.

Mine have had baytril when they were poorly & it cleared their coughs/colds up in no time.....good luck, keep us posted

Hi everyone, vet gave Meredith eye drops and Baytril, enough for the rest too.

Take one bird to the vet, ask for Tylan and they should give you enough for others (which will be plenty for the future too). If they are that ignorant with poultry, just ask them. If mycoplasma, should clear it up no problems.
Don't forget, tis' the season for sneezes and wheezes, so expect some. A few of mine are sneezing and coughing at the moment. Seems to go through them all then they are ok. Feed them garlic and ACV, plus a poultry drink, and maybe some soluble vitamins to boost their immune system.
Have you wormed them recently? Just a thought.

Thanks Monty Tom, I did not know it was normal to go through the coughs and sneezes, there is two of the rest sneezing alright, and I was worried, but feel a little bit better now. The vet does not stock Tylan or any other name it goes by, but had Baytril and gave me enough for the rest. Only thing is, he gave it to me in 5 individual needles that I have to squirt into their mouth... now how am I to catch the rascals and administer it?!
I have the ACV and am going to investigate more on garlic now because I've seen it several times mentioned in posts!
Monty Tom, I did worm them recently, are they prone to illness after worming? I used Verm-X.

I had to give mine 1ml each, instead of using the syringes I soaked into pieces of bread. I let them out in the morning one at a time so I knew each one had had their medicine. Alot easier than catching, holding their mouth open etc......

this baytril stuff will the vets just give it to me or would i have to take a bird in to see them. cant bear paying £38 for a check up on a chicken as thats what mine will charge .
although there is a vet nurse there who keeps hens maybe i can ask her

When I first went, I took one with me, afer that I just call them & don't need to take any in. I reckon your vet nurse should be able to help you out. Baytril is a prescription medicine though.
