set of 1st in trays or put in direct?
-
You can do either. Mine are in trays only because the ground is still so cold. My shallots are still in trays but they have rooted. I prefer trays so that you can spot the duds and when they have roots the birds cannot pull them out of the ground so easily.

Mine are in trays with half an inch of mp compost in the cold greenhouse. They seem quite happy and the winged ones cannot get at them.

i do bothways.. we grow loads of onions, and i would like to pot all of them but have to short cut sometimes

Mine are in trays in the greenhouse but they have sprouted already. Is this ok ?

Yes:

Oh good :) hope they do well this year when planted out. Last time I got onion fly but this time I will collar them around the base.

When do the heat treated onion sets go in? I ordered mine last Autumn but they have not arrived from Marshalls yet.
-
Planted my sprouted sets out on Saturday. Netted immediately :)
-
Direct outside for me, putting mine in at the weekend if its not to cold.

Me too, can't be doing with a lot of faffing!

Mine are going in trays as I'm having a load of soil improver delivered at the beginning of April that I want to dig into the onion bed.
