Brassica netting question
« on: May 16, 2019, 23:01 »
Hello, planning to plant out my brassica seedlings tomorrow as its a bit cooler with a chance of rain. I dont want one of those plots where everythings covered up but cabbage whites are rife on our site so Im going to make an exception here!

So whats the maximum gauge netting I can get away with? I want to see my crops but keep the pesky CWs off. I've heard 7mm netting is good, anything wider?

Yes I’ve just  bought 7mm butterfly netting to redo mine. I used debris netting the past few years but last year they got infested with whitefly worse than usual & then got mealy bug. I decided that the netting had stopped predators getting to the bugs !

Thanks for the link mumofstig. I had been intending to reply about using enviromesh to exclude diamond moth but agree the white fly are really awful. What to do?! Caterpillars, birds, whitefly, root fly....

At home before I got allotment I never netted - relied on bug spray or ripping off the outer leaves if caterpillars survived it. However I have read hear that brassicas don't like wind and as allotments tend to be more open than back gardens use fine mesh even if it is just around but not over the bed.
