Can someone please help two of my girls have started to eat the wood shavings from the bottom of the coop, they only seem to do when i clean them out on a sunday,they have greens and grass and layers pellets and have some corn before bed. is it something that they all do? :ohmy:

Could be something they are missing in their diet, no idea what though

I used to have a hen that liked pecking bricks, I tried to put grit in their diet, but it was never taken, if it was it was a small amount

I've seen my chickens do this on occasion - well, mostly they drop it again. They were young chickens though so might have been learning.

I'm using straw in my coop at the moment. I started using it instead of hemp shavings as I didn't like them trying to eat it. Maybe you could try straw instead?

They could be bug hunting. Check the coopfor red mite, a sugeestion given was run a piece of white paper in the cracks, and check the chooks for lice.
