Overfeeding?
« on: June 14, 2010, 21:18 »
Hi, is it possible to overfeed my girls? They stay in their run until lunchtime, and roam the garden until they put themselves to bed at dusk.  They have access to pellets all day, and most days have some fresh kitchen greens/dandelions hung up in their run to peck at.  I think I read an article by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall that they wont over eat, is this true in your experience?  Would appreciate any advice.  Many thanks

Mine have access to pellets all the time too. No, I don't think chickens can overfeed on pellets. I have kept chickens for over 3 years, they have always had access to pellets and it has never caused them any harm  :).

they can overfeed if you give them too many treats and mixed corn. The majority of their food should come from their layers feed.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks for that.  I dont feed grain, but they do get some from the rabbit food they pinch!  Poo is sometimes a bit squity, too many greens?  I'm new to this chicken keeping, hope I don't ask too many daft questions!

Too many greens, yes.  but it won't do them any damage.

Layers pellets ad lib, fresh veg and free ranging will never make them fat.

If ranging as you say they will burn any excess off. I think I would need all of my current 5 girls to make one decent meal, but they are as fit as fiddles, healthy and happy as all chucks should be  ::)
