Title: Is my 3wk old barnvelder trying to crow???
Post by: babaloo151070 on June 20, 2012, 12:17
I have a 3wk old barnvelder chick that today did something that made me think it was a roo!

It's stretched out its neck opened its beak but no sound.  It did this fie or six times in a row!

Could this mean it's a roo or is this normal behaviour in chickens?

Normal behaviour when they are tranferring the food from their crop to digest.  You could check that the chick hasn't eaten anything too big and is having problems though.  Long grass can cause impacted crop so keep your lawn well cut if they are freeranging.   :)

Oh tank you. Well they are eating chick crumb and not free ranging yet. I thought they may still
Be a bit small for that so they are still confined to the run.

If they have a broody with them you can let them freerange for a while as she will point out what is and isn't food.  Better than watching the telly.   :D

Yes I agree with ANHBUC. Far better than telly. Cup of coffee, comfy chair in the garden and Mo with 4 chicks (4 weeks tomorrow)  roaming as well as Minnie and 8 week Georgie.  :)

Lol I tried this yesterday. I agree it was very entertaining but after about 15 min I got scared I wouldn't get them back in and headed them back to the enclosure lol.
