New chook not sleeping in coop!
« on: October 03, 2011, 20:29 »
I bought 2 new chooks last Saturday to add to the 3 I already have.  The new ones have their own coop until they all stop fighting!!  The new ones have been going into their house as soon as it gets dark, after free ranging in the garden but tonight one of them has decided to sleep under the decking and we can't get to her.  My husband has blocked her in, so no foxes can get in.  Should I keep her in her run for a few days, so she will know where her house is?  I thought after a week she would have sussed it by now :nowink:

Sounds like it might be a good idea to keep her in her run for abit longer.   Do you give them corn or treats in the evenings before they go to bed?  If she is free ranging you could throw some treats into her run and hopefully she'll dive in there after them.
Have you tried putting the new ones in with the others at night?

I found that it helps to establish a specific rattly pot from which you serve their corn in the evenings - a good rattle of the pot and my girls hurtle from all over the garden to ensure they don't miss out.

Always the same pot so it makes the same noise!

I haven't tried to put them to bed with the others yet.  Was planning doing it next week when they, hopefully, stop fighting!!!  When I give them treats in the evening, they don't seem to be interested.  My older girls come running when they see me going into the cupboard where I keep the treats  :)
