I have 6 seeds of chilli plants and about 20 of sweet pepper's im wondering if its logical to sow them now, even though now they wont produce many if any chilli's/peppers but its said that these plants produce the best harvest in their second year. so im thinking to germinate them now and then when the cold comes, trim the seedlings/plants down to their stems and over winter them inside. hopefully next year they should grow

Sounds a good plan for the chillies but not so sure about over wintering sweet peppers. Hopefully someone will advise on them

I over-wintered 3 sweet pepper / chilli plants and the peppers are just turning red now... thought they are chilli shaped and not bell peppers if they are the ones you mean?

I dried some hot chillies last Autumn (from only 3 or 4 plants) and I have enough to last me until this Autumn. Although these are for flavouring - just crushing into the cooking process - rather than looking nice on the side of the plate :)

I have found overwintering chillies isn't compatible with my over wintering habits, and they all die as a result!

what exactly do you have to do, i thought you just cut the stems down an inch above the base and kept the soil dry until next year april?

I overwintered a Hungarian Hot Wax and an Anaheim as whole plants, then drowned the HHW with overwatering! The Anaheim looked quite poorly but come the light and warm weather has perked up, sprouting new growth and flowers all over - expecting first chillies in a few weeks...

Chillis will usually lose their leaves in the winter & you can cut back to a few (maybe 4) inches above the soil.  The most difficult thing is not overwatering them - they drown pretty easily.

I'd say that you're a bit early starting plants for next year, but I did the same at the weekend, so you'd be no crazier than me ;)

I overwintered a scotch bonnet last year -- whole plant about six ins tall in a 10 ins pot, as it was easier to control water level in compost in a larger pot. Got fruits almost ripe on now.

I usually have couple I keep and I don't cut them back far unless they are vast plants
