sweetcorn
« on: May 22, 2012, 20:53 »
Would it be ok to plant outside this week under pop bottle cloches?, some are about six inches tall, or is it still a bit too soon?
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Had mine out under plastic for 4 weeks.
Only trouble has been raising the plastic as the sunflowers I plant between them have reached 30 ins already.

Mine are going out unprotected today.
It is 23c here today and similar temps all the way through to Sunday.
The night time temps are good as well with lows of 12c.

99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I've moved mine outside into the blowaway, still in their toilet roll tubes.  They have been hardened off for a fortnight or so during the daytimes - I intend to plant them out this weekend if the five-day forecast still looks decent on Saturday.

Fingers crossed for everyone else who, like me, is taking a little gamble with putting things out.

How big is everyone else's sweetcorn?

Mine's been a bit hit and miss - I've got 6 that are about 20cm high and some that are still looking a bit weedy. I sowed them in April so was hoping they'd be huge by now. They seem a bit little to go out?

mine are a foot tall and were planted out last night after 2 weeks of hardening off in the cold frame. Ideally, I would have left it a little longer but my schedule is a bit mad for the next 2 weeks so it's now or never  :)
