Mixed flock
« on: June 26, 2010, 22:04 »
What is the general view on having a little flock of mixed breeds of chickens?

I would love to have a trio of different birds. Are there any good or bad matches?

We have kept chickens for several years but always had little flocks of just one breed.
Any advice appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Butterfly, well in our little laying flock we started off several years ago with 6 Amberlinks and 6 Goldlines, then we added a couple of our own raised from day old Amberlinks, then another couple of goldlines, then last year we rescued 6 hens, among them a black pearl, a black rock, a bluebelle and a coucou, then this year we took on another 3 another brown one, another bluebelle and can't remember the other.  And a couple of weeks ago, we took on Scrappy doos 8 girls, but they aren't in with the flock yet, but they will do and they are brown ones, white ones, another coucou and a black pearl.

They all integrated pretty well, with the odd tiff, but if you get your 3 all together, they should be fine from the outset!

Good luck!!!!

Mind you after saying that, you'll probably get 3 who hate each other, but if you can find 3 you like which have been brought up together, you shouldn't have a problem.
