Hello all,
Unfortunately i haven't got time this year to run the heaviest pumpkin competition, so if there are any takers that would like to run it they are more than welcome to take it over :)
Best regards
Y.E.A.H
-
Ok........I'll do it :)
The winner will grow the biggest pumpkin, rather than the heaviest.
You will have to post pics of the final measurement and we'll also have a poll for your favourite pic at the end, for the pretty rather than large pumpkins :)
Obviously it has to be grown and not bought , but it can be any variety you would like to grow.
Ends 31st October
let me know if you want to play :nowink:
Playing so far:

-
Go on then! Mine might just be pretty and not big, but I'll have a go anyway.
-
How do get the weights?
Is it done on trust?
-
Last year we did the biggest pumpkin, rather than the heaviest.
Post pics of the final measurement and we'll also have poll for favourite pic.
Obviously it has to be grown and not bought ::), but it can be any variety you like to grow :)
How does that sound :)
-
Sounds good to me.
Im in, i suppose i'll have to learn how to post a pic some time

I'm now kicking myself for having chosen Small Sugar as my pumpkin variety for the year :(
Perhaps a vist to the garden centre for some more seeds is in order...
-
Thanks Argyllie,
I'll have to head to the gardencentre and get me some Hundred weight or Atlantic giant ;)
-
Put me down please... :)
-
im in
-
im in!
-
Never grown one......
But we're in :D
WW 8)
-
i'm in :)
-
Me too please - Can't do worse than last year!
-
although i'm not running it this year, i'd still like to participate please :D
i have gone and bought Dill's Atlantic Giant seeds :D

I'm in

I,d also like to throw my hat into the ring.. :D
-
Count me in too. :)
-
Fatbelly's playing.
-
oh dear i can feel myself typing and also saying 'me please'!!! im rubbish at pumpkins so if there is a booby prize i'll be betting it has my name on it already! haha
-
Yes please
-
Can't miss out on this, count me in please.
-
I'm in... I've never managed to grow a pumpkin yet so I need I don't think I'm a threat to anyone ::)
-
I might like to play - what size won last year?? I'm guessing butternuts aren't the best variety? ;)
-
I was so optimistic about last years competition... was my first year with an allotment and basically my first year growing anything... Managed a nice perfect halloween sized pumpkin but nothing larger... Dont think i fed it enough though!
Put me down for this years competition please.. will have to try again :)
-
Add me to the list please.
(Forgot to say, when I carved last years it broke the knife in two - may not be able to grow the biggest, but probably the toughest!)
-
Me too :)
My son's Atlantic giants are doing well. But I do like my turks turbans, very colourfull and tasty.
Steve
-
I'd definitely like to give this a go, hopefully some competition will encourage my pumpkins to get larger than the golf ball sized efforts of previous years.
Also, what varieties are people growing. I picked up some Atlantic Giant seeds and am hoping that they live up to their name.
-
Please add me to the list
I tried last year but failed big time !!
-
can I throw my hat into the ring for this as well please. Last year was rubbish...got a couple small football sized ones but have a different variety this year :tongue2:
-
i followed last years comp it was sooo exciting (i need to get out more) count me in this year, never grown a pumpkin before, but hey ho i do like a challenge :) :)
-
count me in (noticed pumpkin plants in the GC today - came as a bit of a surprise) Isn't it way too early?
-
yup....too early ;)
-
does anybody else want to play?
-
Count me in please - though it will be the kiddos growing the pumpkins! :D I thought it would be encouraging for them to compete against each other to see who could grow the biggest pumpkin - so hopefully one of theirs will win!
-
can you add me in please
seed arrived today!
-
Can I be added please? Bought the seeds today at the Garden Centre
-
Count me in!
-
Me too - I'll get my son and nephew sowing some seeds :)
-
I'll join in, thanks.
-
Get posting then Simon.
You'll need at least 50 posts before entering the competition. But I'm guessing you manage that LONG before the pumpkin has grown
-
My seeds are just popping out of the compost, so I'll enter (assuming I get to 50 posts before then :tongue2:)
-
Count me in.
Don't sound sooo confident as last year Ice? 8)
I'm sowing the seeds next week.
-
BEWARE Ice has magic seeds :tongue2:
-
Count me in (Thanks to the wonderful lacewing who so kindly sent me some seeds as my small sugar variety isn't going to win any size competitions)
:D
-
count me in!
Must be able to do better than last year when all I got was just over tennis ball sized pumpkins!
-
ill give it a go (goes to break it to the wife that we need yet more seeds)
-
Now that two of my four Atlantic Giant have germinated, could you please count me in!!!!!!!!
-
crafty move nige ;)
-
Count me in as well please especially as I am trying one of those massive American varieties :D
-
crafty move nige ;)
Indeed MoS ::) ::)
-
I'd definitely like to give this a go, hopefully some competition will encourage my pumpkins to get larger than the golf ball sized efforts of previous years.
Also, what varieties are people growing. I picked up some Atlantic Giant seeds and am hoping that they live up to their name.
I'm growing Jack O' Lantern and Atlantic Giant. The AG needed to be started off on wet kitchen paper in a tub, a bit like sweetcorn chitting. They wouldn't start just in a pot in a propagator.
-
I'll give it a go - not grown pumpkins before but am trying 'Connecticut Field' - AKA Jack O'Lantern!
-
'Connecticut Field'
Thanks for mentioning this rossco, thats the kind I grew last year but I didn't know their name. :)
-
You're welcome!
-
Count me in please
-
BarrowBoy, you'll need to get posting as you need to be a full forum member with at least 50 posts before you can enter. :D

Well disaster this morning.
OH has just informed me that the 2 giant pumpkin plants we had have been eaten last night along with a corgette and 3 butternut squashes.
They have eaten through the stems and left the leaves apparently.
She lifted the tray that they were sat in to find 2 rather large slugs >:(
She is now on slug patrol under the other trays and pots.
The little ******* >:(  >:(
So thats me out of the running. :(
-
Ha ha, oi'll give it a go now me Atlantics have popped up...I'm in!!
:) :) :)
-
Oooops, before I hear the angry flutter of words in my direction, only just noticed the previous post...my "Ha, ha" was definitely NOT aimed at Stompy's poor loss by slugs, just the entire thread (read the first couple of pages)!!!
Stompy, sow again, still plenty of time...
Phill :)
-
Toys duely thrown from pram :(
And im taking my ball home :tongue2:
-
Can you put me down please? My atlantic giant's are doing quite well in little pots in the conservatory.
-
Count me in first timer so looking forward to the fun of this :)
-
Add me please. One which survived the frost is now about three foot in length
-
We measure the pumpkins, not the vines!
-
Oh I know just meant its got lots of buds on already
-
All males !
-
How do I tell if male or female buds-flowers?
-
The female flowers have a baby pumpkin behind the flower...........the males just have stalks ::)
-
I'll have a bash....sounds like fun!
-
I'm in but going for small but perfectly formed!
-
Me too - the variety is called Baby Bear :D
-
I`ll have a try,not sure which plants I put in are pumpkins courgettes or butternut squash....I didn`t have anything to write on the plastic label when they were potted on.I was quite sure I`d remember which was which! :nowink:
-
I've got the first two female flowers on my Atlantic Giant. Fingers crossed.
-
No problems.
Fingers crossed they drop off!
-
I'm in but going for small but perfectly formed!
That sounds similar to my "prettiest" plan. :D
-
Surely my Thelma Sanders squash will be the prettiest ::)
You will vote for MumS's squash.....you will vote for Mum's.........
-
Well, bit of a set back, only one out of first 3 plants survived the winds.
More growing on though! :D
-
Just been to lottie and one of the buds has a pumpkin behind it. So excited
-
I'd like to try, bet I win the booby prize though, they are not Atlantic Giant and they shore do not look very pretty plants at the moment but I will persivere.
-
Some fat slugs finished my pumpkin plants off when they had 4 leaves, all that was left was the stem >:(
Therefore I withdraw my entry this year.
-
:( very sad!
-

Nash, You should remove some of your weed suppressant matting (it's slug paradise under there) and do a bit of hoeing instead.
-
No problems.
Fingers crossed they drop off!
The flower was opening when I came down this morning. Need to find a suitable male flower to poke in there!
-
Hi folks i planted some pumpkins 2 weeks ago hopefully they will be up in the next week so count me in if that is ok !
-
I will add you, but you have to have made 50 posts by the end of October, before judging :)
-
The plants are making good progress plant 1. Has two established fruit about cricket ball size and plant 2. One about a golf ball size.
With all this rain we have had this week in Essex I am hoping to find a couple of footballs tomorrow
-
So cold, so wet, so miserable. I expect mine to shrivel up and die
-
Have the pumpkin plant in the ground now, just got to get posts up to 50 then I can enter! :)
-
Can I have a go please.
Reg
I grow 6 pumpkin's every year and on Halloween night we go to my daughters home and have a BBQ and carve up the pumpkin's, the first year my youngest daughters husband said NO WAY it's childish, well he did have a go and his was the best one.
We are this year thinking of floating them down the canal with lights in them.
-
Sure no problem ;-)
-
Sorry I diidn't know about the 50 post part !!
Is there anything else that happens when 50 posts are reached ?
-
Nothing too remarkable!
It's just an arbitary level set to ensure that it's our active members that can participate and not someone who joins trying to win the competitions, (not just this one), although you'll never make your fortune from the prizes.
I'll sure you'll manage another 15 posts before the end of October!
-
I planted my first one yesterday in a space the first earlies came from. Sank a plant pot next to it so the water goes to the roots. How often should I water it?
-
Only you know how dry your soil is :nowink:
-
Don't forget the foliar feed of Resolva 24. :tongue2:

Good advice (http://bestsmileys.com/evil/8.gif)
-
I have 3 fruits so far getting on for tea plate size ( obviously not flat ::) - couldn't think of a ball the same size!)
Just need to keep them going and keep the insects away!! Probably need to feed them too !
-
Just to help get my numbers up to fifty so i can claim 1st prize :D thought i would provide a quick update pic of my pumpkin, the black case is off my blackberry as a size guide.
problem is this plant has 4 pumkins of similar size on the same vine and i cant bring myself to cull the others to make it focus on just one!
-
Thats a good size!!!
Dont think i've even got 1 pollinated yet :(
But we all know the story off the hare and the tortoise :D :D :D
-
very true....it may just be early i think it may be holding my final weight-in, in august rather than october
-
posting like that doesn't count, either
So I've deleted the copycat one!
-
Just seen this thread - is it too late to enter? Will work on the post count!!
-
You'll really have to ::)
-
I have a question...
The closing date is on 31st October, is that the date that the pumpkin should be measured or can they be measured at any time before that date ? Mine are going great guns , but I am worried they will not stay the course! Can ?I keep taking photos and just enter the biggest one?
Thanks
June
-
I'm in, if I can work out how to post a picture. It's the first pumpkin I've ever managed to get past ping pong ball size!
-

What variety is this?
-
@simonwatson
Its dills giant atlantic purchased from T&M a couple of years ago. I grew them last year saved the seeds but had a total failure in germination from the saved seeds, then found two seeds in the old packet and both germinated fine !
-
I've got one Atlantic giant that's just started to take off. Looks like one fruit is set, but it's only tennis ball sized at the moment. Hope mine can give you a run for your money!!
-
Only time will tell, they seem to double in size week on week these have been going about 3 - 4 weeks now i am sure you will soon catch up!
-
I've got one pumpkin which is slightly larger than a tennis ball all the others dropped off when smaller than this. Does it mean its been pollinated and will keep growing now or is there a fear it might still fall?
-
I think that one is up and running by the sounds of it!
-
Excellent in a Mr Burns style
-
:)
-
I would like to join in please. I have a couple plants that are growing well, I just need to get the fruits sorted out a bit.
-
Sorry, if you have plants that are growing well, you don't qualify. :tongue2:
I'll stick you in as mos seems not to be around at the mo.
-
At last i've seen male and female flowers on pumpkin and squash plants. Maybe too late to grow a winner but might but beter looking than last years ug ;) ;)ly *
-
woo hoo, first time grower and its about the size of a honeydew melon, i got it over the tennis ball stage without dying !
-
I've actually got a female flwoer that's opened.
Might have to pollinate it with a courgette though! >:(
-
Might have to pollinate it with a courgette though! >:(
And the result might look like...... :)
-
I seem to have some whoppers growing!
I will post a picture later :)
-
(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b128/rossco_99/45248647.jpg)
Photo with my wallet as a size guide, the wallet is 4 1/2" long.
I have 2 this size, at least 4 slightly smaller and another half a dozen of the tennis ball size.
-
@Rossco what variety are you growing?
-
Might have to pollinate it with a courgette though! >:(

A pumpkin.
Next year's could be interesting though.
-
@ BarrowBoy - Connecticut Field
-
We should be safe then, I think they're a standard variety, not a giant one! :tongue2:
-
We should be safe then, I think they're a standard variety, not a giant one! :tongue2:
I will feed them up some more!!!
-
Out of interest, when do they normally start to turn orange?
Never grown any pumpkins before :D
-
Out of interest, when do they normally start to turn orange?
Never grown any pumpkins before :D
I'm interested too - I put in two pumpkin plants (generic garden centre from the same tray). One has a decent sized yellow pumpkin growing, and this morning I found a tennis ball sized, dark green one on the other. Will this turn orange, or stay green? I suppose it'll taste the same?
-
They don't all turn yellow/orange - some even stay green until they've been stored for quite a while - I still had a green one at New Year 8)
You do notice a change in their colour when they get ripe though and (apart from the ginourmous ones) the size will tell you.
Also the skins get a lot tougher so you can hardly dig a fingernail in.
-
At lat mine are up and running :)
Forget feeding with beer, think they deserve a good single malt to catch up!
Or is that me who needs one :D :D :D
-
There's only one place for beer and that's not being used on pumpkins or slugs!
-
Toooooooooooo Truuuuuuuue
pump slops from the local for the slugs!!!!!!
-
I've "stickied" this just until it's all over, as the thread's getting popular now. It'll make it easier to find.

I'm sure everyone was already glued to it DD. ::)
-
Stickie - a piece of wood............... -aaarghhh - I'm at it now!
-
Count me in
Yet again, im growing a small variety this year but im still all for it :)
Does it count if i merge all my pumpkins into one big pumpkin ? :tongue2:
-

-
ME please!
-
First year of growing pumpkins so count me in please
-
I have limited the Atlantic Giant to the two best fruits. Time will tell!!!!!!!!!!
-
Don't forget to feed them.
Try a high nitrogen foiliar feed. May I suggest a feed of pure liquid nitrogen at -196 oC?

You can rely on the helpful advice on this thread can't you :)
-
Chuck my name down please I get a feeling a pumpkin might be the 1st thing ever to come off my allotment, so I'll be going for the sympathy vote :tongue2:
-
Why do they say to put pumpkins on a piece of glass and when do you start to do that?
-
I wouldn't recommend glass from a safety point of view, but anything like an old tile, piece of slate etc. can be used.
It's just a barrier between the pumpkin and the soil to stop the nasties burrowing in.
-
Goodo I put one under this morning would post a pic of mine if I can work out how to from my new phone. It's about a size one football shape at present
-

Wow! That's one BIG phone! :)
-
Lol
-
Well, despite Morgan the bleedin' stupid labrador happily treading all over my pumpkin patch, my four jack o lanterns and 1 atlantic giant are still going strong, not quite stopped them yet, I'm waiting till they've grown a little bit first, they're only tennis ball size at the moment!
-
I have five growing on one bush at the moment, I know I should stop the plant but it is the only one fruiting and it is so lush that I cannot do it. ::)
-
I was wondering about putting something underneath the fruit.. Fear I may be too late though! How easily do the stems break?
-
One of the fruits has tripled in size over the last two days :D :D
-
It's now an inch across???
-
It's now an inch across???
I wish ...................at least twelve ;) ;)
-
I'm only just getting male flower buds on mine. :(
-
I've 3 or 4 about 18 across :) :D :tongue2:
-
I've 3 or 4 about 18 across :) :D :tongue2:
cm or in :)
me too - ( inches that is)
-
Truth junie :nowink:
Only mm :(
-
Just been out for a measure and was really surprised.. Something good has come out of 2 weeks of rain... Fingers crossed they don't vanish.
8 largish pumpkins the 2 biggest 53 and 52 inches girth.
-
Ah, the old "two tape measure trick!"
Only joking; those look brilliant (and no, I've never grown them - struggling to even get my little winter squashes to deliver this year!) :)
-
Hang on - don't think it's a level playing field!
Says he who's pumpkins only threw up their first male flowers today. :(
-
i have one good one slightly bigger than a basket ball is that good at this stage did'nt measure it,i had others but they died off at about cricket ball size,i measure everything in balls
-
It's good compared to my tidlers but not good compared to some others mentioned above :nowink:
-
At last.....a challenger has risen.
-
It certainly gets the prettiest award! What variety is it?
-
Atlantic Giant. For some reason it started off with a green tinge.
-
Mine didn't do that - always boring orange - love them, I hope they stay that colour.
-
I have one green football at the moment, how do I know when it stops growing?
-
The measurement on the tape measure stay the same. :tongue2:
-
Mine are about football size but similar to pompeyspud atlantic giant but not quite right. Seed from same pkt as last year but green stripey fruit more like a cross between a pumpkin and marrow in shape :( but its all part off the fun of growing ::)
-
Ooh got a second pumpkin growing bit bigger than a cricket ball
-
I've got two fruits on my atlantic giant that are growing. Both bright yellow and the size of a grapefruit at the moment. Fingers crossed.
-
Please count me in. Mine won't win any "Pretty" contest. In truth it's as ugly as sin! but size may give it a chance!
-
I'll add you to the list, but you have to have a post count of 50 by the end of October (forum rules ;))
-
Sorry! didn't realise that. 50 eh, well I will try, though I suspect you'll all be sick of me by then!
-
good luck :)
-
No 1 is coming on rather nicely ;) Still yellow and still growing. It's nearing Space Hopper Size at a guess
No 2 Is about Basket Ball size :)
-
I am out my soil is very poor where i have planted next year though ;-)
-
Count me in please - I'll get my posts in :)
-
What does one do with a large pumpkin? I grow the small ones (so I won't be taking part) they are great microwaved as an individual vegetable.
-
1. Its good fun just to grow them
2. Kids love them to cut up for Halloween.
3. Roast slices or make pumpkin soup.
4. You could try pumpkin pie with the rest.
-

I'm going to try pumpkin pie this year I think. But first and foremost our daughter will be carving her "prize" pumpkin and she can't wait!!
-
I've got three growing now basketball size cricket ball size and slightly larger than a golf ball
-
heres one of mine
only been on the grow for about 3 weeks so doing rather well !
measuring about 50" at the mo though wont really know till its harvested
my little helper loves them
-
My biggest is looking quite good, bigger than football size which my second biggest is. I doubt it will win but I may as well enter! If it's not too late of course!
(added to list ;) )
-
I grow Atlantic Giant and my pumpkin is now at least the size of a beach ball and I am not able to lift it anymore. I water it every day with nettle and comfrey fertilizer and it feels like it gets bigger and bigger each day.
So if it is still possible I would like to enter the pumpkin competition as well.
(added to list ;))
-
Come back from hols and although the pumpkins are OK the plants are not very well, going brown. They are probably as big as they will be - but I will keep trying!
-
I thought i'd already joined this.... but seems not... please count me in too....?
:-)
-
Im pretty worried having seen some of the competition around! Mine are only around cricket ball size at the moment! Hope they catch up!
-
I don't think I stand a chance of winning, as it's the first pumpkin I've ever grown but I have to admit, I'm enjoying just having something grow so well!!
Is there a prize for best virgin pumpkinner? :D :tongue2:
-
There are no prizes at all, it's just a bit of fun ;)
-
There are no prizes at all, it's just a bit of fun ;)
I know, just kidding. ;)
-
There are no prizes at all, it's just a bit of fun ;)
Now she tells us! :tongue2:
-
I suppose I could manage a 'get off the norty step' voucher.............
-
Hey - we could have a game of forum monopoly - "Go directly to the norty step, do not pass the plot gate", buy up vacant plots, build sheds on them, get cards from the community shop.....
I shouldn't have suggested that, should I?
-
uh oh, bad idea
-
"Go directly to the norty step, do not pass the plot gate"
Yes I think you should test that feature of the game, for suggesting it. :D
-
I'm back and I'm still in I hope!
-
of course ;)
-
Hows everyones Pumpkins doing? One of mine is now slush (Why does that happen?) The other I will measure in the next few days ;)
-
i wondered if we could enter please?? i know i need a few more posts but would like to if thats o.k
had to bring our 1st pumpkin home today as the stem had snapped as it had fell over in the bad weather its the biggest thing we have ever grown.
the second one is a little way behind this but they seem to be the talk of the allotment. its been lovely to share this as they all ask 'how big this week??' and the suggestions of what to do with them after
heres a pic if i manage to load it up :D its 61inchs all the way around and 31 kilos in weight the 2nd one is ....................???? we'll have to wait and see ;)
-
bigger than a cricket ball but not as big as a football, :(
-
This friendly competition ends on 31st October, so there is plenty of time for them to get huge ::) ;)
and for the pretty ones to get prettier :nowink:
-
My biggest one is now bigger than a football, although it is orange now so I'm guessing that means it won't get much bigger. I also have a really ugly one but I don't suppose there is a category for that!!
-
What kind of pumpkin is that Teasmade? It's a lovely shape!

Mine's not a compy winner, it only got to 50 something inches round, nevertheless it's been given it's own little display at the harvest festival, along with some of my carrots.

Well, it appears I won't be putting mine in the competition after all - it has been pinched from my allotment plot, together with quite a number of small ones - absolutely pointless!!
-
*!
I know that my allotment neighbour (the chairman no less) had 2 of his nicked last year, even used his wheelbarrow to do it :-(
-
hi TheSpartacat,
its alantic giant i think but bought on sale and had some dodgy stuff from same shop ??
no manure just compost and a lot of love :D and food
thanks for saying its a lovely shape as it is very witchy and full of halloween potential :)
due to hot weather it is not happy so have to deal with it this weekend
pumpkin pie anyone???
-
Hi I can't enter this competition as not enough posts.
Anyway i've never grew pumpkins before but my daughter gave me some seeds from a magazine,Out of 10 seeds only 2 managed to survive to produce pumpkins, and the plants seemed to go on forever.
They produced 6 pumpkins between them, about the size of a football, sonot going to win any competitions with them! anyway.

Some 1 put me out of my misery :( :(
There must be some big'ish pumpkins out there!
Seem's like its a poor year for size up here but have 3-4 football size per plant :D :D
-
Well here's a pic of my 3 and I'm fairly pleased with them, all the foliage is starting to die back now so I'm tempted to harvest them now to be honest as there's a risk they'll get nicked :-(

The one on the left is the largest it's not just a trick of the photo.
-
I'd get them in, Paul. Looking at the colour, as you say, they won't get any bigger and it'd be a shame to lose them.
-
yea, think its gonna be a job for tomorrow
-
Walked into our local convenience store, to see two huge pumpkins about twice the size of mine, which I am pleased with, one was labeled up as 58 kg ( didnt look at the price) Now thinking mine are a bit small, :(
-
Harvested my pair this weekend.
One of them crossed with a Crown Prince but still gave a weight of 78lb.
The other one is 74 inches and weighs 106lb. Has a chance.
Last years was lighter but still won the village contest so...fingers crossed.
Trying to send pics from phone to pc.
-
Me and my boy pulled our Big Max pumpkin yesterday, i havent weighed it yet, but measures at 47 inches around....little lad is chuffed to bits with it :D
-
Well, finally got mine in today, never got a chance at the weekend.
Only 3 of them in total but the largest is 55 inches which I'm quite pleased with personally. (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d33/Donegal_Paul/Allotment/p04.jpg)
I weighed all three and they go from 12kg to 18kg to the big one weighing in at 24kg.
I used a paint pot and the bathroom scales reset to zero so it was only weighing the pumpkin and not the paint obviously. This way with the big one on I could see the scales :-)

i bought mine in today
my arms are still sore from lifting it so will post a pic with measurement very soon.
I wont know the weight as i don't have any scales which is a shame.
im very proud to say the least and certainly put the "Giant Pumpkins" at tesco to shame
-
well here they are, certainly a happy chap !
-
We can all see they're big, but will you actually measure them like Paul Canning did in his pic above, please.
-
here we are around 82 inchs
-
Thank you :)
-
lordanatos - you've unintentionally created a bit of a quandry.
Whilst it's not specified to the letter, the ethos behind this is to register at the start of the season and see where we get at the end of it, not to suddenly appear towards the end of the season with what could be a winner.
You've not actually registered as requested in the posts at the start of the thread and therefore, by the book you are not "officially" in the contest.
If yours is the biggest it may not seem fair to the others who did register.
It's not my decision, but I feel inclined to stick with those who have put their names down, think about a closing date for entries if we do it next year, and for this year have a "this is what you're up against next time" category.
-
oh man, i probably didnt read the posts close enough to see that i had to put my name down for it :( :( :(
-
Second post in the thread.
-
ok i really didnt read close enough !! :tongue2: :D

Who's decision is it DD?
You're correct in saying that it isn't specified to the letter that their name has to be down in order to take part...
To my mind, it doesn't really make a huge difference to anyone else's pumpkin size to know exactly who else, or how many other pumpkins they are up against? A biggun is a biggun... it doesnt change anyone else's growing tactics if that makes sense...
It would be different if this late entry was someone who literally just joined the board to then say they had the largest pumpkin... :nowink:
heres one of mine
only been on the grow for about 3 weeks so doing rather well !
measuring about 50" at the mo though wont really know till its harvested
my little helper loves them
It's clear from the above post, back in August that Lordthanatos has considered himself in the competition for at the past two months, would it be fair to fault him for not literally asking or saying:
"Can you please put my name down?" because for me at least, that's evidence enough that his entry is more than valid.
-
I note your opinion Spartacat - but it's not your decision who should be included in the competition, or not.
The decision was made by moderators, and not just DD - lordthanotos, and everyone else, will remember to make sure they put their names down next year, won't they ;)
-
Unfortunately mine got stolen over the weekend :(
-
That's sad stu :(
Please can you all measure & post photo of your pumpkins if they are big ones, or
just post photo of the rest so we can choose the prettiest one :nowink:
The closing date is 31st October, so please post by then.
ps: there are a few people that need to make some more posts in order to qualify ;)
-
What a great Idea !! Next year I'll be in on this for sure. This year I was not prepared. My pumpkin patch is cleaned out, and what I don't sell, goes to the pigs and live-stock. Count me in next year!

Sorry but im with spartacat on this one.
I think that someone has done a really good job in getting one this size and feel that not being aloud in could be quite discouraging in a major way for them and their child :nowink:
He posted back in August, why didn't a Mod tell him he needed to put his name down?
I feel there has been a mistake from both the Mods and the member.
I personally think the decision should be overturned, just my opinion but i would like to hear what others think about it!
-
I think it's a pumpkin competition, on a website.
There will be another one next year probably.
Just judge the ones who entered at the beginning and admire the other fine ones.
-

Exactly, so why can't he be aloud in?
There will be another one next year probably.
Possibly so, but how would you feel if you grew a fab one this year thinking you may win, only to be told what he has, a simple genuine mistake that in my opinion would be overlooked if it wasn't so big ;)
-
I don't think anybody would grow a big pumpkin 'because they thought they might win' this competition ;) We grow them for personal satisfaction, surely.
When I took on this competition it was supposed to be a bit of fun between friends, with no prize!....and very little in the way of rules, apparently ::)
So to restore harmony ...............anybody that has already posted on this thread will be included in the judging. as long as they have made enough posts to qualify.
(If the competition is run next year.........the rules will be made plain at the outset)

A very wise and honourable desition Mos.
This is why you are my favourite Mod. ;)

Right, that's it! I feel hurt and dejected now. :D

As well as you too Gwiz, of course ;)
-
well we only have one pumpkin to enter as the other one got mould and had issues shall we say :(
i know its not the winner but enjoyed watching it grow so 61 inches round is as large as we can get but my husband now has the pumpkin bug so he reckons next year they will be bigger and better :D
cant wait to see everyone elses pumpkins good luck to all :D
-
My Atlantic Giant weighed in at 33Kg's and 56 inches circumference. Alas no picture as the neighbours I gave it to have already started eating it ::) ::)
I did get a lot of enjoyment in giving it to them, as I know they are vegetarians and that they would put it to good use!
-
Alas no picture
good job it wasn't a winner then nige ;) but it was a lot bigger than any of mine

Would a seed packet picture count?

Mine is 64 inches.
Not the biggest - but not bad for a first effort
-
It's obviously not been a good year for pumpkin growing with very few posted results :(
So Well done to lordthanatos for a whopping 82 inch winner
Squibbs was 2nd with 64 ins
and teasmade 3rd with 61ins.
The prettiest pumpkin prize goes to DD. simply because I like a nice harvest festival display ;)
Roll on next year :D
-
WoW 2nd - I am surprised - for an Atlantic giant its not all that big, though a lot larger than the pumpkin on the sister plant (the little one in the barrow)
Hopefully next year we shall all be bigger and better
-
i am so sorry i have not been on the site but the 'C' word is coming and i work in a school so its all go, go, go massive 'C' countdown to squeeze it all in!! :D
3rd, my husband will be chuffed, thank you and we look forward to next year
