Garlic braid
« on: August 12, 2012, 20:25 »
I was going to try to make a garlic braid this year from my crop, but when I looked up instructions on the web they said you had to wet the stems so they were pliable enough to wrap around each other without breaking. I'm not sure I like the idea of doing that, I'd be worried it would affect the garlic's storing ability. Anyone know another way of making a braid that doesn't involve making the stems damp?

I'd read somewhere that it was best to braid about a week after lifting as the stems would not be brittle as not completely dry.  I did mine at this point and on the whole everything went well, although one or two seemed to crackle.  Only time will tell...

Don't know if this is too late for you?

I have braided mine in the past and have done them when there is still some flexibility in the stems, I have never thought to wet the stems to be honest.

Shokkyy, is this a video on Youtube?  I knew there were various I have found in the past when researching for a web article for our allotment site's website.  I don't remember it stating to wet the stems though - like you, I'm not sure its a good idea.

I think you can see from the clip how dry the stems are but there doesn't seem to be too much issue.

Hi Madcat, so how did the garlic store if he dampened the stems?  shokkyy was concerned they may not store well if dampened during the process and I must admit I have never dampened the stems either.

They stored fine until the spring when they started to shoot.  I'll ask him tonight but as I remember the first inch or so stayed dry and then the rest of the top was just moist enough to be pliable - not soaking.  They need not to be so dry that they break off before they are secure in the braid.  You dont need the whole leaf length.  When the braid was finished it was left to hang up outside in the wind (out of the rain - we have a sheltered area) to finish drying and curing in the sun.  And until we tidied the shed enough to move them into it!   ::)

Why not just tie them in bunches, like you see in french markets. I do mine this way and they are much easier to use tied like this and i think they look better, a bit more rustic looking :)

Gave away loads last year!  No such luck this year - they are a complete disaster!
