Best carrots for a small plot
« on: April 03, 2019, 11:40 »
Hi everyone , need your help again . Which are the best carrots for yield , size and taste to grow in a small vegetable patch .
I have grown Nantes last year and was happy with results but I believe there are better flavoured carrots .

Thanks , Stephen

My personal preference would be Chantenay Red Cored 2.

On a small plot, don't go for stump rooted jobs as you have a small area go for long deep roots.

Cheers,  Tony.

P.S. Anyone seen no " "!  keyboard play-ng up
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Have a search for sweet-tasting carrots or even finger carrots.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My suggestion would be Sweet Candle which I've found to be tasty (and sweet), give good yields and also stand well over winter. They are also popular with my plot neighbours.

I haven't grown enough varieties to have an opinion, but I do know that home grown carrots taste way way better than anything you can get in a shop or supermarket. Grew Nante, Autumn Giant and St Valery last year and they all tasted good.

Ive mentioned this before on here a few times, so will repost what I have said then;

I grow carrots in 12 inch width by 9 inch height pots I grow mine as baby carrots.
I grow Amsterdam Forcing, Chanteray and Touchon and have done for over a decade.
I sow over a few months from Feb to June and pick through the harvesting season, June to October and for Touchon, September to January.

I sow thinly, but do thin out seedlings and pop them in spare pots.
Do cover them with netting for their early growing stage, more to prevent animals digging up the bare soil than carrot fly (that Ive never seen here).
I like pots as I have them placed all around the plot.

Touchon are a lovely carrot, my favourite. I've not grown myself but Sweet Candle is well spoken of both by show growers and a market gardener I know.
