Parsnip leaves decimated
« on: August 08, 2013, 15:20 »
checked lottie today only to find 3 8ft rows of parsnips with brown filigree leaves, on examination found dozens of tiny (1/16" dia 1/3 " long) catapillars on the plants. They are so small difficult to make out colour.Neighbouring lottie member though they could be moth catapillars. Any help appreciated,
Bish
PS stalks still stiff and green

spray with malathion or crop saver.

if swift moth, look at roots (holes)..live in soil and move backwards. burn roots do not compost. use bromophos when sowing

Yes they have!!!!

You can use Bayers Provado Utimate Bug Control spray though, which is readily available in DIY stores and garden centres

Banned from being sold and banned from being used. If it is banned it may even be because it is a danger to life, causes cancers or affects the nervous system. We don't really care about you Momofstig, it is your poor unsuspecting family or neighbours who eat your pristine produce that we worry about.

You don't happen to have any DDT that I could treat carrot fly with do you?

I think this last comment may be directed at the wrong person.

Mumofstig said these products had been banned by the EU.  Totty's reply said banned from being sold, not banned from being found at the back of the shed.  Mumofstig and Sunshineband, as moderators, have then replied, without being heavy handed, to make it clear they don't think using banned chemicals is a good idea.

As moderators we don't condone the use of any unlicensed pesticides on crops.  If people choose to ignore EU directives or any advice we give on the subject, that is up to them  :)

What?!!!?
All I said was that it was banned from being sold. But there is no law saying I can't find old stuff at the back of the shed. I didn't suggest or condone using it.

When the EU banned these chemicals they will have put a 'last date that they can be used' in the ban order.
