Lady Christl, storing etc.?
« on: October 15, 2010, 22:16 »
I have voted on all the potato threads and have a couple off sacks of picasso and desiree in storage for the winter.(love them both)
This year i grew LadyC for the 1st time (was given 15'ish seeds) and  lifted them early as salad or small boiling spuds, was very impressed with flavour, crop size and pest resistance.
My questions are, will they typically grow on OK to a larger size, will they chip and roast, can they be stored over winter?

Hi sutty,

They will grow onto a larger size, they do chip and roast beautifully and I'm afraid I can't advise on winter storage as I have none left. I'm sure somebody will know/will have tried this though..

Use them first.

They will store, but being a first early, and no doubt being out of the ground first, they will be the first to chit.

"First" is the keyword.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The storing ability of earlies usually comes down to taste. They develop a bitter taste over time in storage where as maincrops don't seem to be affected as much.

I have noticed, on a number of threads, that folks are talking about storing their potatoes already. Although, up here, I lift my maincrops for storage by the end of October, down south I always used to leave them in the ground until  February or even March with no problems.
Are folks lifting them for storage so early because they are likely to be attacked, might rot because of waterlogged soil or because they are desperate to prepare the ground for winter?
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

cos the longer they are left in the ground the more likely they are to get eaten

Thanks, will grow extra next year but not too many then.
If my spuds still in the ground in  September they get well munched
Luckily a bit of a microclimate round here and not much above sea-level so rarely get any frost after mid-april. i like to get them in early so lifted earlier
