Broccoli seedlings???
« on: April 13, 2011, 20:10 »
I have now sown two lots and they are stretching far too high and falling over, the first time I thought I hadn't given them enough light, so this time round I did them in window sill and moved them round as the sun past the house so always in good light.

Is this common???, how do I stop it???

cheers
JIM

AFAIK, brassicas really don't need to be inside - they don't like the heat that much.

I germinate in a pot with standard compost outside under a cloche.  Took a few days and all up (3 year old seed).  Def dont need to be inside.

What about the falling over bit though?

I bought mine as plug plants, and they seem pretty healthy except they're now in 4" pots waiting to go in the plot, and are not standing up!

It's so long since I grew PSB, that I've forgotten what they do about now!

Or can I put them in now, as they've been outside for several days, in a sheltered spot.

They will just be too warm, no?  Id pot them on up to leaves and stick them outside under a cloche.

I'd plant them deep, upto there first true leaves.
Then put a 2lt plastic milk bottle over them for a week or two.
Make sure you put a couple of cains into the milk bottles so they aren't moved by the wind.

As above you just need to plant them deeper - this is fine for all brassicas and you shouldbe have a problem

I sow all mine in modules then plant out and i always have to plant much deeper

Planting deep is always good as brassicas put out roots all the way up the stem when they are buried.
