Harvesting Swift potatoes
« on: May 19, 2022, 12:25 »
I have not grown Swift before and am wondering when to harvest them for the best 'new potato' taste. Some places say as early as 7 weeks after planting, others say 10-12 weeks. I planted them in the 3rd week of March and protected them from the frosts here in the Peak District. With all the warm weather they have grown well so I was wondering whether it would be worth fertling at 7 weeks this season or whether 10 weeks is more realistic.

I would wait 10 weeks. I had a fertile at mine at 8 weeks and they far are too small to reap the benefits. Sounds like I am 2 weeks ahead of you so next week for me. I did grow them under cloches though.

For early type potatoes, its always about 10-12 weeks when they become ready.
Some flower, some do not. Never found that to be the actual time for harvesting.
Best is to feel around in the soil at the 10 week stage and pull out what you want.

I’ve just dug my first root of Swift and mine are definitely ready. They’ve been grown in a polytunnel.

Just a thought after reading a few articles over the last couple of days.. when we dig up maincrop potatoes it's usually when the haulms are dying off.. one article said exactly the same for first earlies.. to get the maximum return from your crop, let them die off first!

You definitely get more that way.  I've done it when I have got carried away buying seed potatoes and had too many first earlies.  Now how could that happen I wonder   ::)

Anyway, secret seed spud buying addictions aside, it is something special to get the first potatoes fresh from the soil, home and cooked and on your plate within hours, even if they are a bit small, so you takes your choice on that one

Here are some Swift that I harvested today. They’re all a decent size. Yum!
