Right then. No more peat-free stuff for me as I've just emptied out the failed pots and there's some white sort of rootlets in it, so am wondering if it keeps more moisture in which probably led to damping off. I'm going to direct sow my dwarf beans into the raised bed and see how they do. Watch this space.

I found the same, I have just potted out my teeny tomato plantlets which I potted in peat free stuff, into new  peat containing compost. The roots were weak but when I tipped the soil into my compost bin there was a lot of rootrun at the bottom of the pot, it was very odd, it had become detached from the plants, maybe that’s why they struggled to grow at all.

Funny that...

I tipped out a pot with a failed tom plant still in, and there were several small white grubs wriggling around. They were no much bigger than a grain of rice, but easily discernible, and squashable of course!

The tom had been nibbled around the roots, but no other toms had the problem, thank goodness!

I'm trying tom cuttings for the first time this year, (a chum is away for a long holiday, so I'm nurturing some plants for when they get back), and there are about fifteen, so I hope they work, but it's amazing how easy it is!
