Anyone used Capilliary Matting
« on: May 13, 2014, 19:42 »
Does anyone use Capillary Matting on a regular basis? I've just tried it for the first time and it looks like it could be a great time saver in watering seedlings etc.
But can anyone tell me if it lasts for more than one season or should it be replaced each year? Also any good sources of supply would be helpful.

Would also like to try using the matting in large, flat bottomed trays without drainage holes up to 1.2m long x about 60cm wide. Anyone know if these are available and where?

Many thanks for your help.
Ron.

I used it last year to keep the chilli's watered. Just "re-activated" it today, to keep some seedlings watered whilst we're away for a few days.

I've also lined a growbag tray with some (and one end is in a tray full of water) to keep another batch of plants watered for the 5 days.

I use capillary matting in a growbag tray to spread the water between my tomatoes when they're in 9cm pots.

I've used the same matting for 3 or 4 years. It needs to be washed out at the end of the year to keep it working but it seems fine.

Just bought 800mm x 2m length on ebay after paying about £4 for 5 tray sized bits. I love the stuff saves me going to the allotment to keep watering every day.

I use these in my coldframes on the plot with capillary matting. i am going to rig up a drip irrigation system for these this summer as i have found some low pressure drippers that go down to 1/2 a litre per hour. the trays also fit in one of these http://www.twowests.co.uk/product/jumbo-propagator-set in the greenhouse at home.
I was lucky to get mine second hand on ebay (wish I'd got more at the time)

Yes, I've done that in the bath too in the past.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks to everyone who replied to my query of using Capillary Matting.
I have now extended it's use with some great results.

Also found a supply of 120 x 55cm Garland trays and even 120 x 120cm if anyone is interested let me know.
Thanks again to all.
Regards.
Ron.

I saw the 120 x 120cm trays in a local independent garden centre at £34.95, which I think is about a fiver less than the RRP.
