Too late for potatoes ??????
« on: July 10, 2008, 20:59 »
Hello again since you have been so very helpfull to me in the past I'm hoping you can help me with this.

I always thought potatoes were difficult to produce but I have a friend who is growing them and says it is quite easy so I thought I would give them a go, my dilema is this, I went to the local garden centre to buy some and was told it was too late ??? I thought they came in four types and would be able to start now ish. I have also looked online and cant seem to find any to buy anywhere so am I too late for this year ? and if not does any body know where I can get hold of some and give me any tips on growing them.
As always any help is greatly received thank you.
First year growing, so far, so good.

I had a similar conversation with a guy on my plot who is just about to put some earlies in, having just lifted the lot he planted in March.

In theory earlies will take around 4 months to mature. So if you get some in now, they may be ready around the end of October. I guess it depends a lot what part of the country you are in, and what the autumn weather is like. I'll have a go at successional sowing earlies next year.

Not sure where you can find potatoe seeds though. A local garden centre is still selling them, so have a good shop around. You could always try some of Tesco's finest. But the danger is that they may not be disease free.

The only ones you'll get this time of year are specially treated ones. I can't immediately see any T & M ones that are not sold out.

As for the others, given some of the reports we've had back on this forum about late planted spuds - no way would I fork out nigh on 13 quid for 2 kg of seed spuds. Next March will come soon enough!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DT Brown are selling them now but they're quite expensive £4.95 for 10 so I'm not bothering.

this is a useful site to get you started, also dr hessayons veg and herb expert book is invaluable.
best thing u can do is go to ur nearest stable and get some well rotted horse manure to put on your plot in the autumn then u will be well ready for next years season.
