Sweetcorn
« on: May 13, 2012, 07:59 »
Morning All,
I have 20 sweetcorn plants about 30cms tall currently on my window sill. I was wondering when and if I can move them into the greenhouse?

Any advice appreciated.

Kind Regards
Steve

Mine have been in the unheated greenhouse for about 3 weeks now since I chitted them & they are fine.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

time to plant out yet would you say? I havve some pioneer plants out on the allotment under fleece and they seem to be doing ok. I am in Cornwall and not expecting frost again this year though we do have cold nights.

Not here.

Whilst probably not quite a getting a frost, we are forecast some low night time temperatures. Whilst these won't kill delicate plants, it can set them back to the extent that they find it hard to get going again.

That's why I'd sooner sow a couple of weeks late, rather than force the issue a couple of weeks early.

If you could pop your rough location into your profile, it would help, especially when it comes to discussing topics like this that have regional variations in the weather.

Sorry to hijack but I have a sweetcorn question too.

I have 28 plants that are about 2" high on the windowsill.  Could these be put outside on my racking that has perspex sides before finally moving to the plot?

If so will they need hardening off 1st for a few days?

Cheers

I think it's far too cold still for that Stratts.  I'd keep them indoors until they're bigger and it gets warmer.  We're due a blast from the north this week.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
