jumps back in amazement
« on: October 30, 2021, 12:38 »
the wife and I where putting plants away in the greenhouse for winter and generally clearing away rubbish and tidying up the garden for winter

I was putting all the compostable things in the compost bins i removed the lid of one of the bins and removed some  old storks that hadn't rotted so I put them in the re-cycle bin then looking  at the top of the plastic bin and it looked as though something had chewed a hole in it ?

remember i had just taken some old storks out of that compost bin I was about to tip some more rubbish in the bin when out shot a damn rat I must have jumped 10 ft in the air when i seen it I couldn't believe my eyes what I had just seen the rat had obviously bitten a hole in the plastic lid to get inside  the bin because these storks made good bedding needless to say the rat  traps where immediately set with a nice piece of cheese to temp our unwelcome visitor to try

I was lucky because i managed to survive without a cup of tea and a clean pair of pants

It always amazes me how many men are scared witless about rats. I don't particularly like them as they can carry disease but I wouldn't run away like I would with a big spider.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I used to have a family of rats living in one of my compost bays on the allotment. One or other of them quite often used to pop their head up when they heard me coming, just to say good morning.  I left them alone, they weren't doing any harm, and better in the compost heap than in my shed.  Like Goosegirl, they don't bother me, nor do snakes, lizards, mice or anything else except great big, hairy, eight legged, boot wearing spiders, one of which, years ago, I had to spray rigid with hairspray because it was on the lavatory wall and I was desperate to use the facilities.

I had to stop emptying our compost bin, as when I stuck the fork in there was a huge yell, and a whole nest of mice started giving me gyp, so I put it all back, said sorry, and used something else!

I'm convinced that every small black spider is a False Black Widow too - one pranced around on a piece of wood I was holding - then not holding...

Rats and mice I can cope with but spiders are a totally different thing.  Large spider and I can outsprint Usain  Bolt.

I do however love seeing spiders webs on frosty mornings.

For ages, we have either had dogs (dachshunds, or dachs x terrier mutts). or cats, so no worries with rats, mice and suchlike. Spiders I mostly have no problem with, if indoors, I put a clear plastic container over them, slide a thin cardboard underneath, and escort them outdoors. I rarely get startled by one on me, though I try to be cautious, as we do have true black widow and brown recluse spiders. I like observing spiders outdoors, especially orb weavers and jumping spiders. Jumping spiders are small and sort of cat-like/comical, not a threat, good hunters of tiny pests.

I'm cautious about snakes, we do have copperheads (very common) and people do see rattlesnakes occasionally. I've never seen a rattlesnake myself in Georgia, though they are definitely here (I saw too many in Montana and Colorado). I've only killed one copperhead in my life, I felt it was necessary to protect my children and pets at the time, though I've always felt bad about it.

Spiders I don't mind, if they are in the house they can have a wander about.   Rats - horrid - disease carriers.
Snakes - no way.    But frogs and toads, totally hysterical, go into house and lock myself in to be safe from them.Fortunately, rarely seen as I have to get somebody to move it.    All the Counselling I had for this phobia didn't work.  ::)  Mrs Bouquet

SubP, my sister-in-law in Richmond has a crawl space under the house for chairs etc., and one of my nephews often went under there, and saw all sorts of nasties, but there's an insect which looks like a cross between a spider and a cricket, and they get in everywhere if they can! They hang uspside down under there and to see an insect a few centimetres long is a bit frightening...

Do you know what they might be?
