Strangest Allotment find
« on: May 12, 2019, 22:15 »
Well over the years I have found numerous things when digging the usual nails, bits of toys, coins etc.

However, my allotment plot seems to be turning up some interesting and on time scary items. Last year digging in an overgrown section, I uncovered a chunk of decaying flesh and then what looked like fingers - only to then realise it was a pigs trotter !  buried presumably by one of the allotments resident foxes.

Today I unearthed one of the strangest things - a block of cheese still in the majority of its wrapper.  Must be another "gift" from our resident fox.

All I've found was what appeared to be a broken white shaving mug along with bits of blue and white pottery plus some old horse shoes. Although it wasn't on the allotment but by an old post which our gate is attached to was an old horse brass swinger without its bells.

Lots of clay pipe stems at my previous allotment in the Midlands.
On my new plot in S. Wales I found a lovely Mercedes car hood mascot. I dug deeper, but there was no car!!

When I took on my current plot I filled two buckets of different types of knives

I'll dredge up the famous story on our allotment site of the days when a previous committee member took on a plot only to dig up a complete vintage Ford car. He did say that the driver wasn't in it. As I've spoken to the geezer I can tell you that it's actually a true story.

Not exactly strange, but after taking on 'The Patch', with about eighty-five million blackberry brambles, we discovered two really ancient blackcurrant bushes, barely alive. We gave them names 'Glad' and 'Den', as they'd had the plot next to us,

They were black with age, and so gnarled, (not our chums of course), we didn't have the heart to dig them out, and that was best for everyone, as they produced the most amazing crop of enormous berries that year, such that we now have cuttings at home for the future! The fruit got even better the year after, and hopefully, the new tenants will have grape-size fruits for years to come!

I haven't a clue what variety they were, but as we still have some in the freezer, I'll ask them...

At the risk of an international scandal, 8, you're getting very close to the Welsh National Anthem.

Just don't go to Cardiff or Swansea in the foreseable future..;0)

Love it, 8!

A few years ago, when I was employed by a firm which dealt with leisure sites, I had to go to Haverfordwest to look over  a site.

Of course, from here to there is quite a long way, and I just had to stop over and enjoy a few jars with chums in 'The Beverley' in Cardiff, and also stay the night in one of those delightful small hotels in Llandaff Road.

The next morning, the 'few' jars seemed more like a waterfall, and while I sat there, looking at an enormous breakfast, I wondered what had hit me, although I was mindful of the eight-hour beer rule for the following morning.

After a suitable time, I set off for the West, and that fabulous road down to the town I needed to see was about two ft under my wheels, and the day was just magnificent!

I did the business, then faced a six-hour drive home in fine fettle, ignoring the signs back to Cardiff (and the pub), and eventually got safely home with heart held high!

I just love Wales, and still have fond memories of all our times in Amroth with the kids, plus several years in Brecon, but that's another story...
