Oxine stabilized chlorine dioxide sanitizer can be used to fog chicken coops to prevent upper respiritory disease caused by fungus spores, it also kills Newcastle bacteria et al. It is a disinfectant which is claimed to be hundreds of times more effective than chlorine (bleach). It can also be used in communial drinking water to prevent cross infection and as an egg sanitiser. It's used in water purification and air-conditioning systems as well as the water and brewing industries.
Does anyone know of a UK source as I can only find US suppliers? Maybe it's not approved for sale in the EU.

Hi Hillfooter, both myself and grannie annie (who recommended it to me :D) use Vanadine V18. It is an iodine based complex disinfectant and is used for the following - water sanitisation, aerial disinfection, disinfection of clean surfaces, general disinfection, for foot trays and heavily soiled surfaces etc. It is available in one of our local pet shops in Spalding (Annie got them to order it in for us) and coes in 1 litre bottles costing £8.95 but goes a loooooooong way. It sounds like the similar to the sort of stuff you are looking for and is made by Evans Vanodine International PLC. although they don't make any claims on the bottle about what it kills just that it is fast acting, stable germicide and protects all livestock and domestic pets. joyfullxx

and they do two types of disinfectant - both data sheets can be downloaded, and both kill mould/fungi spores. For aerial disinfection it is 10ml per 5 litres (1:500).

cant help with the sourcing of oxine stuff but i use Bi-oo-cyst it is a broad spectrum disinfectant which ' is effective against endoparasites (OOcysts) viruses, bacteria, moulds and yeasts.'

It is £20 for a litre but you dilute it 1/125 for general cleaning (defra approved) and 1/30 to kill coccidiosis!
not too strong an odour either! sort of smells like the vets.

I guess you've used ClO2 before, but if not be careful, it is a powerful oxidizing agent and can be explosive. I've used it for water supplies and cleaning smoke damaged houses (it's good at removing the odour). It works well. Be prepared for the seller to ask questions about the use.

Forgive my ignorance, and forgive me for hijacking your thread Hillfooter.
Would these be OK for disinfecting the floor of the run, ie the soil/wood chippings?

Hi I looked into this some time ago, isn't it the SCD(stabilised) version used as a disinfectant by poultry keepers??? MIght have this completely wrong mind you! :D

It is, but the chemists I worked with were dubious about what was happening. Some considered it to be unreliable with the effect being due to the chlorite alone so really not much better than chlorination (we were interested in biofilms). Activated it is more reliable and the action is well proven. Most users either use a two pack system (acid plus chlorite) or an on site generator and would have a full risk assessment before use.
Funnily enough, although this post sounds to emphasise caution, I spent a long time persauding people to use it and believe that it has a lot of advantages over chlorine - but then, at the time, I'd no interest in chickens.

Thank you for that! I was thinking of getting stocks, but obviously dont have an on site generator, so wasn't sure how to get hold of it, or, if I could how safe was it to import in?

Thanks for your replies guys. Sounds like we have a few biochemists on the site! I'm interested in this Product (OXINE is the product name) primarily for fogging houses and sanitising communial water supplies and I wouldn't be using it with an activator. See http://www.eggcartons.com/product-exec/product_id/894/nm/Oxine_AH_1_Gallon_OXI for more details of the US available product which seems to have an impressive list of effective uses.
No Flowerpower this isn't a suitable disinfectant for runs for which you'd be better with a normal poultry disinectant (see Wells poultry or lots of other poultry or argo sources on the web) or readily available Jeyes Fluid. Oxine is only suitable for hard surfaces.
I'll check out the web refs you've given for the sort of application I have in mind.

Hillfooter - if you want it that badly, why not just have it shipped from the US? If it can't be shipped, they'll soon tell you! I have things shipped from the US all the time (albeit not of a chemical nature) and although it can be expensive, it is not usually prohibitively so and is often faster than shipping from another part of the UK!

Thats an article by Katie Theadore, she is based in the states and an advocate of Oxine.

Did you realise the post you were answering was nearly 2 years old Shella? Hillfooter uses Vanodine V18 now I think! :)
