A little egg?
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:24 »
Three weeks ago we got a couple of ex-batts, and at the same time a couple of 12 week old silkies. Since then at least one of the ex-batts has laid us several nice big eggs.
This morning I found a very small egg in the nest box, less than half the size of the others. I think the silkies are too young to lay yet, so why has one of the big girls laid such a small egg?
Is this unusual?

could it be a silkie?  The ex- batts probably wouldn't lay an egg so small if all the others have been normal size

Well, I wondered if it might be a silkie, but the guy we got the silkies from said they're too young to lay yet. I think they are about 15 weeks old now.

could it have been a wind egg (cock egg, blow egg)? - if you crak it open they have either no yolk or just a very small one - my maran laid one a couple of months ago after being broody. Will try and track the photo of it  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi
The little egg is pale brown, the same colour as the big ones from the ex-batteries.
I suppose it's from one of them then - as far as I know only one of the two ex-batts has been laying so far, so maybe it's just a first effort from the other as she 'starts up' again?

1 of my ex batts produced stupidly tiny eggs for a while. They were about as big as a large grape.

I have ex batts and last week i had half a dozen small eggs and it was definatly from them. Then i won't have any for a while and then they lay small ones again, they only weigh about 20g, and have a yolk!!!!
But sorry don't know the answer as to why they come out so small!
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

Cheers all.
It doesn't seem to be uncommon then, or anything to worry about.
I'll just put it down to whoever laid it just being in the mood to lay a little egg today! That's fine by me.

My broody has just started laying again after 9 weeks, the first one was broken & the second one was tiny, like they were when she first laid.........I'm sure yours will get bigger
