over wintering strawbeerry plants
« on: September 26, 2011, 15:26 »
Hi  everyone,
would like some advise on how to over winter my strawberrys. They are all planted in a raised bed. I think I remember reading somewhere that before the first frost you should cut all the foliage back hard and then cover with straw to protect from snow . Any tips would be very gratefull

I cut the foliage back but don't cover them.

Ideally, you'd cut the old foliage only a bit earlier than now, but strawberries are so hardy that they'll forgive you.

But don't cover them. It will only cause mold and other problems through the damp winter.

Webby you can buy and plant out now, this is the time of year that people are tiding up their strawberry beds and moving runners (at least I am)

Hi All,
Mine have been flowering again for the last couple of weeks so hoping for a late crop if the frost stays away.

I tidy mine then mulch them with a bit of compost to keep the weeds down. Mine sat happily all through the snow last winter.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
