Aaarrgghhh greenfly on chilli flowers
« on: June 24, 2009, 08:31 »
All of my chillis on a kitchen windowsill are getting munched, particularly the flowers  >:(
Should I move them outside to a shelterd patio and hope they provide lunch for some ladybirds?
and, thinking laterally as I can't rub them off the flowers, what options for spraying are there from the friendly organic to the nuke 'em options? Probably a silly question, but what would happen if I used ordinary flyspray on them?
Thanks :)

I wouldn't fancy eating produce from a plant that has been sprayed with flyspray - you have no idea whether it will be absorbed in to the plant and persist or not so i wouldn't take the chance.

leaving them outside during the day may help if you have hoverflies or other bugs come to pay a visit. If you can find a ladybird or its larvae they will do you a favour too!

Put a tiny bit of washing up liquid in a spray bottle and fill with water, spray them with that it won't harm the fruit and the soap kills the green fly by drowning them .. mwhaa haaa.

I was inundated with millions for green fly after a week away end of May so I had to use a bug spray.

Carefull if you do end up using a bug spray as some cant be used with open flowers. Make sure you check the bottle. I had them on mine and squashed them when they were on the young leaves. They will go onto them eventually. Washing up liquid spray is good too. Good luck.

Ladybird larvae do an awesome job of cleaning up aphid infested plants :)
