i have some news me and our lass have found a place to rent 1.5 acers two out bildings and a four bedroom cottege.we move in at the end of july. :D :D :D

Well, I went to see the smallholding today for the first time. The place is called Goathland but most people know it as Aidensfield - the fictional town where heartbeat is filmed. Here are the pictures as promised.

This one shows our land. It's big enough to keep all our poultry as well as a trio of pigs and possibly a cow with a calf at foot too.

The view from our bedroom window. Behind the wall is the area where the veggie patch will be. Beats our council estate hands down! :D

Goathland - sounds Nordic., the holding of Goath the strong or something :)
Imagine waking to that view - well, you don't get my cat licking your nose so I suppose you deserve some compo.

I know it well. I come from Durham and spent many weekends on the NY moors. Long before Heartbeat came to the area.
Nice village when the tourist coaches arnt there.

Went with family on a farm holiday very near there in early 70s, when I was about 8. Place called Glaisdale. Beautiful scenery. The family running the farm had a pet lamb called.......Pet Lamb :!:

no not wealthy, the story is my mum passsed away 10 years ago and i had to sell the house so i had money from that which i bought a small ex-council house which double in price(only by the property market doing really well about 3 years ago) then me and hubby went to our limits on a mortgage as an investment for wales so we have a bit of equity behind us, this has been an 8 year old dream, we have a savings plan that matures in 3 years then we are off!! we both work in I.T and don't enjoy the attitude that work comes first (especially in my job!)
i can't think of anything better than being at home cooking for guest's being with my hubby and my animals all day, we have friends in wales so we wouldn't be totally on our own.
we really need to take over a b&b as an on going concern so we can get a mortgage ok. (we are looking for anything up to £350.000 in brecon ideally) :D

Sounds like you had a good master plan and it worked :)
I have some smallholder magazines from 1955 and practical self sufficiency mags from the mid 70s. Both have adverts for property and I did a little research on inflation / earnings etc. Basically the prices have increased much faster than earnings so you played it bang on.
Isn't hindsight wonderful?
Bit of a talking point for your B&B when you offer your own free ranged eggs, homegrown tomatoes etc at breakfast (with an acre you could even have a pig)

kune kune pigs as pets and a goat, wouldn't eat them as i'm a veggie although i will be supporting the local farmer/butcher for the bacon and sausages in the mornings for the guests!

Hi all. I've been offline for over a month now but we're all moved in and settled. We've got four old spot piglets coming in two weeks so I've been getting their new home ready. I'm thinking of putting them on the future veggie patch so they can both rotavate and fertilise it for next year. The chickens, geese and ducks are loving their freedom. I am too. :lol:

Hallo mark congratulations on the new patch - my sister keeps Large Blacks (rare breed pigs) - they did a great job on what was eventually turned into a garden, so putting them on your planned garden sounds a good idea - as you say - lots of manure and soil which ends up being in great condition. And the pigs will enjoy themselves doing all that rooting about too.
