Now that the dark wet and wintery days are upon us I am begining to find more and more poop/mud covered eggs at collection time and the inlaws are getting harder and harder to convince that they are ok to eat but just dont boil them     ,So my question is what is the best way of cleaning dirty eggs  :?:

i never clean my eggs unless i am hard boiling them . everyone who has  my eggs know they are fresh as they are so dirty ..  but when they get laid in the food tray { i use a water plant tray } then they get very very dirty an the mash gives it a pebble dash shell its quite funny .

Have read the site advised on egg cleaning using household products for sanitizing eggs - does anyone know any uk products suitable for this purpose?
Our chooks have nest boxes made by  my hubby's fair hands but have decided to be floor layers (much to his disgust!) therefore the eggs have been slightly grubby some days. Even if the eggs are not soiled should they still be sanitised before boiling/using as I have noticed some shop bought eggs (as my kids call them!) are slightly soiled sometimes! Just a thought!

I've read quite a few messages on this site about this subject and it seems people have views at each extreme.
We simply wipe big bits of poo and mud off of our eggs with a damp cloth.  If we are boiling them we worry slightly more but if we are not we just make sure we break them at a point of no poo!
Personally I think that if one puts chemicals on the outside of such a natural produce it could seep through and then who knows what.
We've never been ill from our poo eggs and I always make sure that when I give boxes of eggs away there is a little bit of hay, feather and poo inside the box!

We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

I have obviously missed some important piece of information.  Why are you only meant to worry about dirty eggs if you are going to hardboil them? Surely if they are going to be hardboiled then all the evil bugs will be killed even if there is poo sticking to the egg. What am I missing? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick or is it just a miracle I'm still alive?

I clean them with a soft nylon/plastic? kitchen washing uo pad. I use warm water as I believe that cold tap water on a warmer egg will contract the contents and draw in dirt and/or bacteria through the shell
