Tomato Blight
« on: March 08, 2011, 10:44 »
Help!!! I've tried to grow tomatoes for the last 3 years and they always come down with the dreaded blight. I don't really want to spray them but I was so disheartened last year after losing all my indoor and outdoor crop. Any useful tips or should I just give up and grow something else!!!

Blight is caused by spores that are wind blown and grow if conditions are right.
I have had it for the last 3 years but managed to get a reasonable harvest by picking as soon as each plant obviously had it (and boy does it spread along the rows quickly!) then ripening on the window sill, picking out any that went manky as quickly as poss.
I was lucky that it didn't hit til August last year so we were eating the early ones. But I still threw quite a few :( and used green toms in salads and chutney as well as ripening off the rest to eat and freeze.
This year I'm doing 50+ plants (13 varieties to test them out) rather than last year's 34. It's gone up every year........ ::) I seem to be good at growing toms but rubbish at roots (except parsnips)
I just love fresh toms and the kids eat them like sweets so that must be good!
Just sown some of the early ones..........roll on Summer!!!
