  You can plant seed potatoes now for cropping at Christmas if you can find them.

Hungarian Grazing Rye is supposed to be good for that. But you can't eat it. You could sow it in September in a few beds and dig it in in the spring.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
