First eggs. . .
« on: April 19, 2011, 15:40 »
The very first egg was this morning but it was a soft shell and was broken on the floor  :( (I think this isn't unusual for new layers though?)

The second though was very tiny but perfectly formed  :)
[Guess which one!]

Are they likely to get bigger though?

Yes, they will. First eggs are all shapes and sizes - even concertina'd as if they've been squashed coming out. It will settle down and the eggs will become bigger and "standard" shaped.

How lovely!
Our first egg was tiny, but perfect in every way. We also got over sized ones, soft ones, wrinkly ones!
As time goes on, they will be in full production of the most perfect eggs, enjoy!

Oh what a lovely little egg!

Does it really have a slightly pinkish tinge or is that just the photo?  What breed of chicken laid it?

Yes, its a bit more pink than the shop bought ones (although presumably they came from chickens too ) All my chickens are hybrids  :)

Your eggs look lovely. We have been the proud owner of 4 hybrid hens since Mother's Day this year and I must say they have taken over our life - who needs SKY TV anymore!!!???
As of yesterday all four hens are laying their one egg per day and at the moment, we haven't had any surplus.
Ours lay a large whitish coloured egg, a medium sized brown egg, a Large Brown egg and a pinky/browny coloured egg (like yours in the photo).
It's so exciting to collect them and I've been reading all of the great ideas on here about signs in windows to sell them, that I can't wait to have surplus (better stop eating them then!!!)
