Slug Pellets
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:32 »
Hi all,

I try to garden responsibly and I have just found in my greenhouse some slug pellets that are not pet or wildlife friendly.  However I have slugs in my greenhouse so I was wondering if I could use them sparingly in there or if anyone knows if there is any way this may cause harm to wildlife.

Birds may be able to get into your greenhouse and ingest the pellets.

If you use them thinly and not pile them up, it should be OK imho  :)

I know birds in theory could eat them, or the dead slugs, but this has never happened in my greenhouse.

I do clear up dead slugs though, as once I had a massive one that was only stunned, came back to life and slimed off  :tongue2: :tongue2:

This would mean there were no dead 'uns around to tempt any bird or animal that managed to get in, too  :D :D :D

As I have a cat I do use a mesh to keep her out of the greenhouse, she likes to sit in warm compost, so I do not think birds can get in, however I am not the tidiest person at this time of the year so I may not be able to find the dead slugs would this be a problem?

If the greenhouse is cat proff I guess not

The slugs leave horrid slimy trails as they die so any big ones would be obvious.

I think most people just leave them anyway. It was just my experience with the reincarnated one that makes me do this

Thanks for the advice, I think I will use them sparingly this year.

On another note, how will I get rid of the left over ones? I do not want them to end up in landfill.

They last for ages so just keep them in their original container somewhere safe and dry, ready for the next time  :)
