Peas + leeks
« on: June 09, 2008, 07:54 »
Hi everyone,

I've been growing veg's etc for quite a few years now, but this is my first attempt at peas and leeks and they are all doing fairly rubbish.

The leeks look like little more than blades of grass, and the peas seem hell bent on running along the floor, with no inclination to climb the wig wams I made for them. They both seem like very slow growers, and I know I'm always very impatient at this time of year but am even more so with these.

Are they particularly difficult to grow or am I just being very impatient.

My peas are a bit wild too, digby
I've forced them up the sticks by clamping them on with clothes pegs - before that they tried to grip onto the raspberry and anything else BUT the sticks
I'm sure your leeks will come on in time, it's early days yet for them.

you're being impatient!!   You could try looping the peas around the wigwams, sometimes they do seem to be a bit dense and choose lying on the floor as the easy option!  I have a couple that still persist in doing that!  Many pea varieties don't grow that tall either so they might be shorter than you are thinking they will be.  mine are just starting to flower, went in as small plants about 3 weeks ago and the seeds are now about 3-6" high (two varieties doing differently).

The leeks will eventually fill out but take time, they very definitely need patience.

Peas, generally, do not climb, but need support.  This is how how do mine..

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Blimey - is that this years, they look amazing, going to add 'pea envy' to my long list of 'envy's'

thank you everyone for the replies, I've planted a few more peas over at the lotty today, and the ones at home are just a bit wayward, liking the clothes peg idea.

My Dad had a load of spare leeks, so I've put some more of those in elsewhere on the lotty.

Patience - definitely not my strong point.

Can I add my name to the list of people with "Pea Envy" all the ones I've planted, 5 locations - Canes, string, pea stick and netting all look like something from the Quatermass experiment.

Still they taste soooo  good it makes up for their bad habits.  :D  None have yet managed to make the 100ft trip back to the kitchen.

And to make things worse, the ones in the back garden, the kids planted - some are sweet peas, some eating ones, no idea which  still all will become apparent in time.
