I've done it at last!

I finally started my first batch of wine yesterday. :D
I wish I'd started it sooner now as it would have been nice to have tried it for Christmas.  Never mind, it'll be something to look forward to when the anti-climax of Christmas is over.

Anyway, I have a question.
At the top of one of the demi-johns there is a lot of froth (I'm guessing from the yeast), but on the other there is nothing.  Is it normal for the froth to be on the top or should I try and mix it in?

Congrats lobot :D

Was going to start myself this weekend, but can't find my hydrometer :x

I know it's in the house because I moved it a couple of weeks ago, thinking 'I'll put that somewhere safe, I don't want it to get broken'.

But a nice lady on freecycle on has one which I will be picking up later. :)  :)

Hopefully I'll have two bubbling away tonight. :)

To be honest it is a bit of a guess but I would try to mix it in.
Would presume that it would sink back in anyway but if not then as it may turn offish after a while it could upset the wine.

I would assume that it is yeast and so mixing back in shouldn't harm it at this stage.

Other option may be to remove the air lock and cork and wipe it away. Assuming that you finger would reach down enough. This may be better as then it couldn't upset the wine and I assume that the wine is fermenting away happily.

Thanks for the suggestions.

It's gone down a bit now, so I've washed the airlock and put it back on.
It's still bubbling away so I don't think it's that much of a problem.

I wouldn't worry too much - if it's bubbling than it should sort itself out. For some strange reason if I seem to make 2/3/4  demijohns of the same time they all seem to bubble / froth at different rates.  Good grief - if it was rocket science I think very few of us on here would be qualified (if only they'd covered homebrew in Chemistry GCSE!!!)

There'd be a lot more kids leaving school with a least one A grade if they did.  (not so sure how it would affect the other subjects though)
