Magic Seeder
« on: April 01, 2009, 21:51 »
I have just tried one of these. I was not impressed. I tried them with leek seeds. The first couple of pushes send three or four seeds out at a time, then one seed, then it jammed up on the seeds. I tried this a couple of times and had the same result. I would expect problems except with nice spherical seeds of a limited range of diameters.

Has anyone else had any success with these?

At the moment I have the same impression, but I'm open to a change of mind. There are several seeders of a similar design on the market. One which looks to be a possible proper tool is the "Pro Seeder". This appears to have several nozzles to suit different seeds, and I think it sucks a seed onto the nozzle, then you squeeze the bulb to release the seed into position.

I have seen commercial seeders which can do tens of thousand seeds an hour, they have attachments which are seed-specific, so a does-all seems unlikely.

Hmmm I think I shall stick with that old method of hand sowing but if you get any really good gadget do let me know as I'm always open  to suggestions to be more economical

Well you could make your own from a piece of thin flexy pipe like used for fish tanks. I don't know what size is best. If you can get some of the glue nozzles used on hypodermic suringes and cut them so the opening is a little smaller than the seed you are dealing with. Insert the nozzle in the end of the pipe, and insert the other end of the pipe in mouth.

Stick nozzle in pile of seeds
Suck
Move nozzle to where you want seed
Release the suck
Seed should drop in place

Cost? Less than £1 I should think.

Although it would work I'm sure I reckon I'll stick with the old way for now as I usually use thinnings either to eat or transplant, dependong on what it is of course
