Help! How to house the nearly-chickens?
« on: April 06, 2009, 14:48 »
So the kids are all up and walking and time has come to take the plunge and go chicken... I am looking at getting 3-4 medium sized hens and am looking for a home for them that will be easily movable by one person (wheels good) to keep the grass in reasonable condition but will give the chooks room enough to roam. The garden is a decent enough size (50'*50' or so) but I don't want a large permanent pen or to keep them loose full time.

We are looking at the "halfway house" from the Domestic Fowl Trust http://www.domesticfowltrust.co.uk/products/info_halfph.html but wonder if anyone has any personal recommendations particularly anything with more room but still movable?

Thanks so much and love all the posts! Starting to feel at home here already!

Have a look at  http://www.omlet.co.uk/homepage/homepage.php

My friends have this chicken coop and run and are very pleased with it.  They say it's a doddle to clean as well.

Hope this helps

The half way house looks so nice! But it seems a bit small for four birds if they are in the run all the time. See what other folk say, but mine have about this amount of space each. If they are going to have a regular run about the garden this would make a difference of course  :D

that's what was bothering me - can always put less hens in / get a bigger home. I think they'll be out pretty frequently in spring / summer but can't guarantee it all year round. Will need to hunt for something with a larger (movable) run!

Personally I think the run space is small.  They don't need a lot of space in the coop, but outside they will need a bigger area.  Why do you need it movable?  Mine have always been in a static run, but have had time free ranging everyday.  We have recently made a bigger run for them.  Make it as big as possible, it will save you making another, as you will!!

Wow - that looks fantastic! Was thinking of moving round the grass so movable to stop completely trashing the lawn! Maybe I'll go see if there is somewhere I can put something more permanent... Thanks all for your comments - very helpful!
